National Maritime Day – May 22, 2020

Details: Created by the United States Congress in 1933, National Maritime Day is a holiday that both honors and celebrates the Merchant Marine. (It also commemorates the first steam-powered transoceanic voyage when the American steamship Savannah set sail from the port of Savannah, GA on 1819.) What is the Merchant Marine? Think of it as the understudy to the Navy; it doesn’t get first billing, but it steps in when there’s a crisis and saves the day. Even when things are running smoothly, Merchant Mariners are working quietly behind the scenes to help make certain that the show goes on — and that the U.S.’s imports and exports get where they need to go.

Today, the celebration of National Maritime Day has expanded to include the entire maritime industry and domestic waterborne commerce, as well as the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving aboard a Merchant Marine ship. So celebrate these courageous Americans this May 22!

National Taffy Day – May 23, 2020

Details: On May 23, we celebrate our favorite sweet and chewy treat on National Taffy Day. Taffy has a long history as one of America’s native sweets. Common lore has it that in the 1880s, a Jersey Shore candy shop got flooded, soaking the shop’s taffy stock with Atlantic salt water. On a lark, the owner sold the candy as “saltwater taffy” and an American delicacy was born! Today it’s sold on boardwalks up and down the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. and has even found its way to landlocked candyshops. National Taffy Day is a day to indulge in the sweet pastime of unwrapping that twisty wax paper and popping a chewy bit of taffy into your mouth. Yum!

National Brother's Day – May 24, 2020

Details: May 24 is National Brother’s Day, so call your brother and tell him you love him, even though he’ll say you‘re weird afterwards. When you were younger, you argued over LEGOs or whose turn it was to sit in the front seat. Yet in some strange way, those childhood squabbles served to make you closer over the years.

National Scavenger Hunt Day – May 24, 2020

Details: Scavenger hunting, which originally evolved from folk games, became especially popular in the U.S. during the 1930s, and regular events are still held today, notably at schools like the University of Chicago. One of the reasons for their continued popularity is the fact that, unlike a treasure hunt, most things you’ll look for in a scavenger hunt are not valuable at all — in fact, they may well be completely useless, but the random nature of the searched-for items is all part of the fun. Some versions are rather like the old-fashioned I Spy game, with participants taking photos of what they “spy” in order to win, and other versions require a sophisticated level of strategic thinking. Whatever style appeals to you, celebrate National Scavenger Hunt Day on May 24 by either participating in a hunt, or planning one of your own!

Memorial Day – May 25, 2020

Details: Memorial Day, May 25, for many Americans, conjures up images of hamburgers, hot dogs, swimming pools, and summertime . But the last Monday in May serves, most importantly, as a time to honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. The day actually began as “Decoration Day,” following the Civil War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Yes, Memorial Day has also come to signify the “unofficial” start of summer, but let’s remember the heroes who made it all possible.

5 CREATIVE WAYS TO DECORATE FOR MEMORIAL DAY

Red, white, and blue. Stars and stripes. Flags and flowers. There are so many ways to adorn your home over the Memorial Day holiday. Here are some patriotic ideas:

1. Unfurl those flags. Often times people store their American flags and raise them only during patriotic holidays. This is definitely one of those days.

2. Line your walkway with mini flags: Nothing honors our deceased veterans like dozens (or even hundreds) of flags in your front lawn and entry way.

3. Red, white, and blue layer cake. It’s a decoration you can eat.

4. Stars and Stripes windsocks. Festive, fun, and patriotic.

5. Even if you haven’t lost a loved one who served in the military, you can still honor the fallen with flowers at home. Red, Navy, and Blue Dahlias combined with white rose silk flowers can make a stunning visual combination.

National Wine Day – May 25, 2020

Details: We don’t typically need an “official” reason to celebrate over a bottle of wine but today we have one – it’s National Wine Day, celebrated annually on May 25. The growing number of wineries across the US coupled with the proliferation of social media options has prompted more creative ways to celebrate with wine for people of all (legal drinking) ages and beverage preferences. Whether you host a wine tasting at your place to try the latest rosés or meet friends for an evening of professionally paired food and wine, the celebration begins as soon as the cork is popped. Cheers!
