Celebration of Life Day

DETAILS: Though Celebration of Life Day, which lands on January 22, was originally instituted to celebrate the children in our lives, it has come to signify all that’s good about being alive. It’s easy to forget sometimes, but we are all fortunate to be here. Take time to celebrate that the good far outweighs the bad in this life. It all starts with gratitude and appreciation for where you are right now, and wherever you hope your dreams take you. Every life is precious, individual, and a huge gift, so take a little extra time today to celebrate it.

HOW TO OBSERVE CELEBRATION OF LIFE DAY:

Make a gratitude jar: It’s important to keep remembering why life is so good after today ends, and a gratitude jar is a great tool! Write down 20 things you are grateful for in your life (your dog, the vacation you take every year to Mexico, your favorite cookie recipe) on folded slips of paper, and keep them in a cute mason jar. Next time life gets you down, your gratitude jar will pull you back into a celebratory mood.

Get outside and play!: What better way to appreciate your life than feeling the sun shining on your face? Getting outside and playing with your children or pets is a fantastic way to boost your endorphins and appreciate the world we live in. Nature is universally considered one of the most beautiful things in this life, so get out there and appreciate it!

Indulge in a childhood favorite: Treat. Self. Today’s the day to celebrate children, so celebrate the child within you. We recommend getting ice cream, a childhood favorite! Try to reconnect with your younger self and get in touch with who you’ve always been.

National Blonde Brownie Day

DETAILS: It’s said that blondes have more fun, but what about blondies? On January 22—National Blonde Brownie Day—the answer is a resounding, “YES!” Blonde brownies, also known as blondies, are baked bars that replace the cocoa in a brownie with brown sugar for a warm, rich butterscotch-flavored treat. Bars are more filling and substantial than a cookie, and are delicious warmed up with ice cream for an impressive dessert dessert or at room-temperature for a quick snack. For those times when chocolate is just too heavy, lighten up and enjoy a blondie. On National Blonde Brownie Day, we celebrate these beautiful bars by baking, eating, sharing, and buying them!

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL BLONDE BROWNIE DAY:

Rumor has it that blondies actually pre-date brownies: Widespread availability of chocolate and cocoa powder is a recent phenomenon, but brown sugar has been around for a long time. In fact, one of the first widely-published brownie recipes came out in 1896—and contained no chocolate. Could it be that blondies are the original brownies? This changes everything.

They show you that you don't need chocolate to have a good time: As difficult as this is to believe, there are some people out there who don't like chocolate (or worse, are allergic to it). What happens when you want a non-chocolate mid-day treat that is more substantial than a cookie, but not as fussy as a cupcake? The blondie has got you covered, and deliciously to boot.

They make the chocolate chips taste better: Let's admit it, sometimes you lose the taste of the chocolate chip if it is in a brownie. In a blondie, however, if you mix-in chocolate chips, those chips really pop. The smooth butterscotch flavor of the blondie allows the chocolate chip to do its thing (just like a great dance partner).

National Handwriting Day

DETAILS: If you keep a journal or a hand-written to-do list, you probably appreciate the tactile pleasures and slower pace of writing by hand. Although it may seem quaint in a world full of digital devices and voice-to-text apps, handwriting is an important skill that can help sharpen your brain, slow the frenetic pace of your thoughts, and improve your memory. National Handwriting Day is observed on January 23, the birthday of John Hancock — the first man to sign the Declaration of Independence. His autograph became so famous that we now commonly use ‘John Hancock’ as another term for ‘signature.’

NATIONAL HANDWRITING DAY ACTIVITIES:

Practice your calligraphy: Have you ever tried to create calligraphy art, or even used a fountain pen? Look up an online tutorial or sign up for a calligraphy class to try your hand at this relaxing and beautiful hobby.

Write a letter to a friend or relative: Communication happens lightning fast nowadays. Take a few minutes to write a handwritten note to a friend or family member. Send it to them the old-fashioned way.

Start a journal: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can have tremendously positive effects on your mood and mental health. Try starting a daily handwritten journal to record your experiences, aspirations, and the everyday happenings that inspire you.

National Pie Day

DETAILS: Sponsored by the American Pie Council (yes, that’s a real thing!), National Pie Day lets us enjoy one of our favorite desserts guilt-free. After all, we’re celebrating a national holiday! While pie exists in some form all over the world, the United States has an inextricable relationship with the flaky dessert. From Don McLean’s epic song “American Pie” to expressions like “as American as apple pie,” our country embraces the pie — apple in particular — as a symbol of national pride. So preheat your oven or visit your local bakery, grab a slice, and celebrate the simple, delicious pleasures of good pie.

NATIONAL PIE DAY ACTIVITIES:

Eat some pie!: Naturally, the best way to celebrate National Pie Day is to eat a slice of your favorite — or try a new and adventurous flavor!

Learn to bake pie: Baking a pie can be as easy as, well, pie. Look up a recipe online, in a cookbook, or ask a family member to share a favorite recipe.

National Beer Can Appreciation Day

DETAILS: On January 24, we celebrate Beer Can Appreciation Day in remembrance of the historic, monumental, and thirst-quenching day beer was first sold in cans. Now canned beer just makes sense. Beer cans are easier to pack in a box or cooler. Advanced thermodynamics and quantum physics tells us beer cans are more efficient to pick up. But remember, fellow history buffs, it wasn’t always that way. If we don’t remember where we’re from, how will we know where we’re going? And wouldn’t we still be thirsty when we got there? Take a minute to think that one over while downing a cold one. Happy National Beer Can Appreciation Day!

NATIONAL BEER CAN APPRECIATION DAY ACTIVITIES:

Buy beer.... in cans: Doesn't matter to me where you buy your beer. It can be a beer your gran' pappy swears by or that ultra micro brew your best friend discovered. So long as it is a can because on Beer Can Appreciation Day we drink from cans!

Marvel at those beautiful beer containers: When ready, remove a single can from packaging, hold it up to the sky and marvel at its majesty. Behold the labeling, the shape, the contours, and all those numbers stamped on the bottom.

Drink the nectar within: Now crack that bad boy and enjoy the flavor that has been kept air tight and far from the light that robs your beer of flavor. Enjoy the wonders of canned beer my friend. You may have earned that reward.

National Compliment Day

DETAILS: On January 24, celebrate National Compliment Day by going all out with praise. The power of a compliment is pretty remarkable: either giving or receiving one can boost your happiness and confidence — making the act a win-win. You never know when someone could use some good vibes, so spread the positivity by giving someone a reason to smile!

NATIONAL COMPLIMENT DAY ACTIVITIES:

Compliment a stranger: Complimenting friends and co-workers on National Compliment Day is a given, but step out of your comfort zone and compliment people you don’t even know. Gas station attendants, Starbucks baristas, bank tellers, the grumpy worker at the DMV — everyone's worthy of receiving a compliment!

Spread the good vibes on social media: Even though an in-person compliment may seem more genuine, what matters is making people feel good about themselves. Be sure to use the hashtag #NationalComplimentDay to reach more of them.

Challenge friends, family and coworkers: See if you can get friends and family to compliment at least one person. Spreading good cheer is contagious.

National Green Juice Day

DETAILS: Health food and drink producer Evolution Fresh started National Green Juice Day as a way of encouraging those who’ve made a New Year’s resolution to stay or get healthy. The company suggests consumers drink green juices to promote good health. Green juices consist of a variety of pressed vegetables and fruits — making them a healthy alternative to other foods. On January 24, Evolution Fresh partners with HelloFresh to provide home delivery of fresh green juices.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL GREEN JUICE DAY:

Drink your fruits and veggies: Remember all those times Mom said, "Eat your veggies"? National Green Juice Day celebrates the fact that you can now drink them. Green juices are a healthy alternative to soft drinks and other sugary drinks. They're rich in antioxidants, including vitamins C and E. Leafy green juices are also excellent sources of amino acids,

A reminder to eat well: Surveys show that New Year's resolutions start to fade somewhere around January 12. National Green Juice Day is more than just a reminder to eat healthy; it encourages you to stick with that resolution and continue on your way to a healthier lifestyle.

They're tasty: Fruit and veggie drinks come in a whole variety of flavors, and there's surely one that you'll find delicious. They're more than just broccoli or Brussels sprouts in a blender; companies that produce them bring a chef's flair to the process. The result? Tasty drinks!

National Peanut Butter Day

DETAILS: When Marcellus Gilmore Edson first patented peanut butter in 1884, he probably didn’t realize it would become a taste sensation that would sweep the nation. Whether you go crunchy or smooth, on January 24 we put down our cell phones and pick up our spreading knives to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY:

Peanut Butter is Perfect for All Occasions: Peanut butter is versatile. You have the option of spreading it on something, baking it, mixing it with noodles, coating meat with it or turning it into a delicious sauce, just to name a few. Seriously, the options are endless.

Peanut Butter Can Help You Stay on Your Diet (No, Really!): Even though peanut butter has a good amount of fat in it, it’s also a very filling food. Therefore, it keeps dieters fuller for longer, helping them resist the urge to mindlessly snack. Researchers at Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital found in a study that people eating moderate-fat items, like peanut butter, were able to stay on a diet longer and keep weight off for a longer period of time than those who ate a low-fat diet. Is that good news or what?

Peanut Butter is Good for the Planet: Each time you eat a PB&J for lunch instead of red meat, like a burger or a ham sandwich, you’re shrinking your carbon footprint by almost 3.5 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. You’ll also save 133 gallons of water and 24 square feet of land per each peanut butter and jelly lunch. Going green never tasted so good!
