Gingerbread House Day
DETAILS: Gingerbread House Day is on December 12! Whether you’re a cookie building expert or your baked house falls apart as soon as you get the third wall glued on with icing, we can all agree the best part of building a gingerbread house is eating the sweet treat when we‘re done!
WHY WE LOVE GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY:
It has fairy tale origins: People in Europe had been eating gingerbread for centuries, but we can thank the Brothers Grimm for the popularity of gingerbread houses. They published Hansel and Gretel in the 19th century—remember that one? It’s the fairy tale where a witch lures the brother and sister into captivity in her house made out of gingerbread and candy, and then tries to fatten them up to eat them (spoiler alert: they escape!) The story became immensely popular in Germany, and people started baking gingerbread houses during the holidays as a result.
It brings out your inner child: There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned arts and crafts project to make you feel like a kid again. And that’s even more true when the materials for your crafting are a) edible and b) chock full of sugar. Throw in the childlike excitement that comes out in people of all ages around the holidays? That’s the trifecta right there.
Plus: ginger is good for you, right?: The main flavor in gingerbread is, duh, ginger. It’s what gives gingerbread that warm holiday taste and subtly spicy kick. Ginger also happens to have a whole host of health benefits: it can help with indigestion or nausea, is anti-inflammatory, and might even lower cholesterol levels, lower heart disease risk factors, and have some cancer-fighting properties. Sure, it’s probably better to eat it on its own, but it’s the holidays! We won’t tell.
December 12th
National Ding-A-Ling Day
DETAILS: National Ding-A-Ling Day is one of those uniquely American inventions. It’s sort of a two-fer holiday where you touch base (preferably by phone — hence the playful reference to “ding-a-ling”) with friends or family you may have lost track of during the year. You also get a free pass to be just a little bit weird for the day. National Ding-A-Ling Day always takes place on December 12 but you can think of it as a second Halloween!
NATIONAL DING-A-LING DAY ACTIVITIES:
Channel your inner ding-a-ling with music: National Ding-A-Ling Day is tailor-made for music. Think of all the songs you know with ding-a-ling in the title. We suggest you play Chuck Berry’s only number one Billboard hit, the 1972 version of "My Ding-a-Ling." Supposedly, this refers to a toy with “silver bells hanging on a string” but you decide. Pop sensation Bobby Rydell also had a song called "Ding-a-Ling," released in 1960. Last but not least, check out ska musician Judge Dread with his island-y version of "My Ding-a-Ling."
Put some money in a Salvation Army kettle: Let the sound of bells lure you over to the Salvation Army's red kettle for a donation to help those less fortunate. After all, this is the holiday season and it's time to open your heart and your purse for a good cause.
Ditch the text and call your family member or friend today: Texting is a thing we do now. Why not buck that trend for just one day and pick up an actual phone to call someone? All jokes aside, National Ding-A-Ling Day was created not only as a day to remember our loved ones but also to keep people from feeling isolated. Plus, hearing someone's voice on the phone is a warmer, deeper connection than just texting.

National Ice Cream Day
DETAILS: On National Ice Cream Day, which takes place on December 13, you probably won’t hear the ice cream truck, with its delightful tune, roll through your neighborhood. (There’s another National Ice Cream Day in July for that.) Your favorite ice cream shop may even be closed for the season! But it’s still a perfectly good reason to get a pint or three (who’s counting) of the good stuff to share with your friends and family.
WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY:
It makes us happy: Now this may seem a bit too obvious, but ice cream makes us happy. If you need proof, just ask some of the neuroscientists over at the University of Sussex in England. In one study, the scientists found that vanilla ice cream activates a part of the brain called the orbitofrontal cortex. In simpler terms, when we eat ice cream, the pleasure center of our brain lights up. This is great news. Thanks science.
It’s social: Whether we’re scrambling down the street chasing the ice cream truck or meeting up with friends at the local dairy, ice cream is more than just a cool treat — it’s a social outing. You can’t beat a shared banana split. Need a place where three generations of a family can all find something they want? An ice cream parlor’s the place to be.
There are endless varieties: Almost as soon as ice cream was sold in America, people started adding new flavors and experimenting with the creation process. Now, more than 200 years later, it’s hard to imagine a flavor of ice cream that’s yet to be invented. Bacon, garlic, wasabi, and fish egg ice cream flavors are all out there at the moment, just to name a few.
December 13th
U.S. National Guard Birthday
DETAILS: Even though it’s not a federal holiday, the birthday of the U.S. National Guard — celebrated on December 13 — is an important event to note. Established in 1636, the National Guard is the oldest military organization in America. Its members serve during times of war and emergency. Take time to honor those who have protected our country for centuries.
WHY U.S. NATIONAL GUARD BIRTHDAY IS IMPORTANT:
It's part of our history: The birthday of this prestigious militia reminds us of our country’s past and can be used as an opportunity to delve further into its history.
It honors heroes: Celebrating the birthday of the National Guard helps show our respect to those who risk their lives for America and its citizens.
It can unify communities: Not many things can bring an entire community together, but celebrating the birthday of a militia filled with brave, self-sacrificing individuals is certainly one of them.
December 13th
National Horse Day
DETAILS: National Horse Day is celebrated every December 13. It’s a day to remember the economic, historic, and cultural contributions that horses have made. Equine enthusiasts across the country will get together on December 13 to show their appreciation for these majestic creatures. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or have never been on a horse in your life, check out some ways you can recognize the day!
NATIONAL HORSE DAY ACTIVITIES:
Go for a horseback ride: Whether you're an avid equestrian or a horse novice, take a ride to celebrate National Horse Day.
Watch a horse movie: "Seabiscuit," "Black Beauty," "National Velvet." And that's just the beginning.
Donate to an equine charity: Lots of organizations are dedicated to helping horses. Do some research and find out how you can help.
December 13th
National Salesperson Day
DETAILS: How many times have you walked around a department store, especially during the holidays, and felt badly for whoever had to fix all those messy shelves? That’s where National Salesperson Day comes in. Shoppers should always be thankful for their help, but on December 13, be sure to go out of your way to say “I appreciate you!”
We’ve celebrated since 2000, making it a point to thank all the salespeople we come in contact with and even posting to social media.
NATIONAL SALESPERSON DAY ACTIVITIES:
Thank EVERYONE: Whether you're gassing up, stopping for coffee, or picking up a gift, be sure to thank all the salespeople you come in contact with. They'll appreciate it.
Share a favorite story: Hop on social media and use #NationalSalespersonDay to share a favorite story when someone went out of their way to help. Those feel-good stories give everyone — salespeople and otherwise — the warm-fuzzies.
Pass out gift cards: Want to go above and beyond? Have a favorite salesperson in particular who always helps? Hand him/her a $5 gift card to your favorite coffee shop to say "thanks."
