National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

DETAILS: National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day is celebrated across the nation on April 30 and we are getting ready to observe the day by going to pet shelters, adopting as many pets as possible, spreading the word among our friends and colleagues, and taking to social media to spread the message to everyone. Did you know, every year, just in the U.S., about 6.5 million animals go into animal shelters? More interestingly, roughly half of them are cats and half of them are dogs.

NATIONAL ADOPT A SHELTER PET DAY ACTIVITIES:

Go to your nearest pet shelter: On April 30, the first and foremost thing that you can do is visit your nearest pet shelter. Take your friends and colleagues along and try and adopt as many pets as possible to give these animals a new and loving home.

Volunteer at an event: If you already have a pet/s and are unable to take in more, then why not go to a pet shelter and help out for the day? Or, better still, you can volunteer at an event and help motivate more people to adopt pets.

Promote it on social media: Share stories, pictures, or videos with your pets on social media and create awareness among people about how cool it is to have a pet. Use relevant hashtags and inspire people to go to a shelter and adopt some pets!

April 30th

National Bugs Bunny Day

DETAILS: National Bugs Bunny Day is celebrated every year on April 30. It commemorates the date this happy-go-lucky bunny made his first appearance in 1938. We are getting ready to enjoy the day in the most fun way possible — by binge-watching “Looney Tunes” throughout the day, eating carrots like Bugs Bunny, and spreading the fun all over social media! Did you know, Bugs Bunny’s first appearance wasn’t on TV or any cartoon channels, but on a short film?

NATIONAL BUGS BUNNY DAY ACTIVITIES:

Organize a “Bugs Bunny” cartoon marathon: On April 30, you can gather all your buddies and curl up in front of your laptop or television to binge-watch some of Bugs Bunny’s popular shows and movies.

Eat carrots: On National Bugs Bunny Day make sure that you have carrots. Eat them raw or prepare a curry with carrots in it. This will be a great way to commemorate the funny bunny and also stay healthy.

Use Bugs Bunny’s catchphrase: If you’re too busy to watch the shows with your friends, the least you could do is use Bugs Bunny’s catchphrase "What's up, doc?" throughout the day. You can also share pictures or videos on social media to give impetus to the Bugs Bunny trend.

April 30th

National Oatmeal Cookie Day

DETAILS: National Oatmeal Cookie Day is on April 30 and we are ready to celebrate in the best possible way — eating oatmeal cookies! Sometimes, this day is also celebrated on March 18 to coincide with National Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day. Oatmeal cookies are super healthy as they are packed with iron and fiber so you don’t even have to feel guilty about the calories!

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL OATMEAL COOKIE DAY:

Oats are an American kitchen staple: Oatmeal is a superfood packed with a ton of health benefits and 80% of U.S. households have oatmeal in their kitchen cupboards. What better way to celebrate this staple food by making a lip-smacking sweet treat out of it?

Oatmeal cookies are healthy: If you’re health-conscious but have a major sweet tooth, the oatmeal cookie can come to your rescue. It’s packed with iron, fiber, and other nutrients and still has a sweetness to it. You can eat it without worrying and celebrate National Oatmeal Cookie Day the right way

April 30th

National Raisin Day

DETAILS: When it comes to raisins, there are generally two groups of people: those that love them and those that believe they ruin a perfectly good cinnamon bagel. But whether you find these wrinkly fruits irresistible, or believe they should have stayed out in the sun where people found them, it’s hard to deny the impact these sweet snacks have had on history, pop culture, and cuisine. We’re celebrating National Raisin Day on April 30.

Raisins show up throughout history and literature as a healthy, transportable snack for everyone from the Egyptians to Christopher Columbus to George Washington.

And of course, those little red raisin boxes are a classic symbol of childhood.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL RAISIN DAY:

Nature's jellybeans?: Perhaps. Raisins can be up to 72% sugar by weight, making them a sweet and satisfying snack. But unlike jellybeans, raisins are have some nutritional value. They boast cancer-fighting antioxidants, provide an excellent source of fiber, and contain no cholesterol.

Raisins complete things: Raisins and oatmeal cookies are one of the culinary world’s great pairings, but it's just one of many. The most obvious? Cereal, of course — as long as it's not too sweetened already. Some other fan favorites: rugelach, cinnamon raisin bread, rum raisin ice cream and trail mix.

Beer Pong Day

DETAILS: Since May 6, 2006, Beer Pong Day has been celebrated on the first Saturday of May every year, and falls on May 1 this year. Here’s how a simple occasion to play the game turned into a day to celebrate the game itself.

WHY WE LOVE BEER PONG DAY:

It celebrates Beer Pong: A fun game that is now recognized by many around the world as a sport, Beer Pong can be played by anyone who is allowed to drink.

It’s a game anyone can play: All you need is a ping pong ball and a few cups of beer or even just soda. You don’t even need teams. Just you and your best friend can play it at your home.

It celebrates fun in the simplest of ways: The game is very simple and yet can invoke the most fun. The more people, the merrier.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL CHOCOLATE PARFAIT DAY:

Everyone loves dessert: Chocolate parfait is the best way to end your meal, be it lunch or dinner. Easy to make, it is perfect for any occasion too.

It is about chocolate: Chocolate is one of the most beloved flavors on earth. This is why almost everyone loves chocolate parfait.

National Fitness Day

DETAILS: National Fitness Day in the U.S. is celebrated on the first Saturday of May — on May 1 this year. The day was founded by famous life- and career coach Kim Bielak in 2017 to dedicate a whole day to the importance of fitness.

NATIONAL FITNESS DAY ACTIVITIES:

Try something new: Add some more exercises to your routine. If you are a runner, you can try yoga for more flexibility.

Experiment with your workout playlist: When was the last time you changed the songs in your workout playlist? Spice it up and add some more excitement to your daily workouts.

Watch movies to inspire yourself: There are many movies that will help you stay motivated even when you are not working out. Here are some honorable mentions: “Rocky Balboa,” “Miracle,” “Hoosiers,” “Bend It Like Beckham,” and “Rudy.”

May 1st

National Mother Goose Day

DETAILS: We are swept back to memories of our childhood whenever we hear of National Mother Goose Day on May 1. From Humpty Dumpty’s clumsy fall and the Three Little Pigs’ scramble for houses to Pinnochio’s elongated nose, fairy tales and nursery rhymes endlessly entertained us as kids whilst providing us with important life lessons. Charles Perrault, a French author, is thought to have been the first writer to establish fairy tales as a separate genre in 1695. Fast-forward a little further into the future, the Grimm fairy tales, which were published during the 19th century, have now become quite famous worldwide. Thanks to Disney, the Grimm fairy tales have become more child-friendly but, originally, they were gruesome in their details. For example, in the original version of “Snow White,” her stepmother died after being cursed to dance in glass heels forever.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL MOTHER GOOSE DAY:

It’s a celebration of our childhood: Childhood nostalgia beckons with a promise of dragon rides and amazing adventures. Through fairy tales and nursery rhymes, we’ve made memories and bonds to last us a lifetime.

It’s a celebration of stories: Stories have the power to take us on journeys without moving from our seats. Stories do not require us to fill out extensive visa documents or have disposable funds for traveling. All it requires is imagination and off you go on a great adventure.

It’s a celebration of life lessons: Teaching life lessons and their importance to kids is extremely important. And doing so through a medium like fairy tales and nursery rhymes makes it all the more fun.

May 2nd

International Harry Potter Day

DETAILS: International Harry Potter Day on May 2  brings merriment to Potterheads around the world. The then UK Prime Minister David Cameron declared this day an official international holiday to honor the literary work of J. K. Rowling. Now, over a decade since the release of the last book in the series, the passion surrounding the characters and their life events have not faded. Grab your wand and let’s revel in the magical history of Harry Potter.

INTERNATIONAL HARRY POTTER DAY ACTIVITIES:

Enjoy Harry Potter at home: J. K. Rowling created Harry Potter at Home, a website for children offering crafts, puzzles, and quizzes. They can join the fan club from this site and discover new things to read about the wizarding universe.

Host a Harry Potter themed trivia night: Gather some friends at your home or virtually to enjoy an evening of Harry Potter trivia. Search the many pub quizzes on the net and see who among your friends knows the most about The Boy Who Lived.

Binge read, watch or listen to the series: It’s a great day to catch up on your reading or binge-watching. Any moments of downtime call for a little Harry Potter.

May 2nd

National Brothers and Sisters Day

DETAILS: Today is dedicated to the people who (we hope) made your childhood memorable — your siblings. They’ve been there for you during the good times. And they haven’t left your side through the bad (even if they created it by getting you in trouble). Of course, there were probably times where you couldn’t stand the sight of each other. What siblings don’t get into fights? Still, National Brothers and Sisters Day is the day to reflect on the best times this May 2.

We all agree about the importance of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. But brothers and sisters know you like no one else ever will.

NATIONAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS DAY ACTIVITIES:

Call each other: What better way to let someone know that you're thinking of them than to take time out and call them? Whether it's FaceTime, or a good old fashion phone call, the gesture goes a long way especially when texting is the norm. So call up your brother or sister anytime of the day and reminisce, we guarantee they will appreciate it.

Spend some quality time together: Plan to spend time with your brother or sister doing all your favorite hobbies together. Catch a movie, visit your favorite restaurant or your childhood home. Whatever you chose to do, just be present with one another.

Give each other a shoutout: Show your brother or sister some love online by shouting them out on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. It may be less personal for some but it means a lot to most to see beloved pictures along with a sentimental caption.
