National Children’s Picture Book Day
DETAILS: When we think of childhood nostalgia at National Today, we are instantly taken back to our picture book reading days, and what better occasion to reminisce on those times than on National Children’s Picture Book Day on April 2? We have flown on the backs of scaly dragons, covered great lengths on conquests with wizards and witches, and eaten walls and doors made out of candy and gingerbread. They have taught us valuable lessons and, most importantly, we have had fun adventures whilst sitting with a picture book open on our laps. A wise person once said that books open the mind and heart to endless possibilities, and it is quite true. Did you know that one of the reasons that National Children’s Picture Book Day is celebrated on April 2 is because renowned fairytale writer Hans Christian Anderson’s birthday also falls on the same day?
NATIONAL CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK DAY ACTIVITIES:
Participate in reading sessions with children: The kids in your life would appreciate it if you spend time with them during this National Children’s Picture Book Day. Make it interesting for them by bringing props and entertaining them with animated gestures as you read for/with them. Not only will they love it, but it will also help with their mental growth and happiness.
Dabble in other culture’s children’s books: Teach, learn, and/or practice inclusivity and cultural awareness and appreciation by looking into children’s books from other countries. By doing this, you will be fulfilling one of IBBY’s goals of expanding the love for books, regardless of background.
Donate extra books to those in need: If you have any extra books lying around your house, donate them to your local charities or to someone you know who will enjoy them. You will be participating in making somebody else’s childhood interesting.
April 2nd
National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day
DETAILS: It’s National Peanut Butter and Jelly day! This combo is just about the best thing since sliced bread, even though technically it’s been around a few years longer. Peanut butter debuted at the 1883 Chicago World’s Fair. It was mainly sold in fancy tea rooms until the early 1900s, when the peanut industry commercialized and peanut butter became more affordable for everyone.
WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY DAY:
It's a complete protein: Combining a legume (a bean, lentil, or peanut) with a grain (like rice, corn, and wheat) creates a complete protein. This means that peanut butter and jelly mixed with whole wheat bread gives you all of the essential amino acids your body needs.
It's elegantly simple: That makes it fertile ground for creativity. For example, what ratio of peanut butter to jelly do you prefer? What flavor fruit — and how chunky the peanut spread? What type of bread? Or how 'bout a peanut butter and jelly bagel? Of course, you can always add additional ingredients. Elvis liked bacon and bananas on his PB&J...and who are we to argue?
It's great on-the-go: This smart sandwich has gotten many families through long car trips, hiking days, and school field trips. Three ingredients yield so many lunches.
April 2nd
Walk to Work Day
DETAILS: Due to its simplicity, at National Today, we are a big fan of walking as an exercise, and this year’s Walk to Work Day, which falls on April 2, has got us excited. Walking burns calories, exercises the muscles, and refreshes the mind. Our day-to-day lives often require us to sit in one place, with little to no movement exerted on our limbs. This sedentary lifestyle is not healthy, as it can lead to weight gain, heart problems, and more. Did you know that a brief walking session every day can help boost your immunity? Now, that’s a win-win situation.
WHY WE LOVE WALK TO WORK DAY:
It’s a celebration of health: Not taking our health for granted is one of the greatest lessons we have learned in today’s day and age. Valuing it and protecting it while we still have it is the best thing we can do. So, do not think twice before taking that walk to work.
It’s a celebration of walking and its benefits: There are a ton of exercises out there to help your body. But walking happens to be one of the simplest and easiest exercises you can do. The pros far outweigh the cons.
It’s a celebration of a great cause: With our sedentary lifestyles, it has become more important than ever to break free of this habit to promote healthier lifestyles. Walk to Work Day is just one part, albeit an important one, in the overall campaign of living and staying healthy.
April 2nd
World Autism Awareness Day
DETAILS: April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. Did you know that CDC statistics revealed that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is 4.3 times more prevalent in boys than it is in girls? This is because girls “often go undiagnosed because they don’t fit autism stereotypes and they mask symptoms better than boys do,” according to the Child Mind Institute. There is no better way to celebrate this day than by becoming aware of the characteristics of people with this condition and how all of us can do better to increase our own understanding and promote kindness.
WHY WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY IS IMPORTANT:
There is no cure, but there are treatments!: Nowadays, there are many ways to treat autism spectrum disorders, but they can only be reached when the person is diagnosed! By becoming aware we can help others to get in touch with specialists and start a treatment that can increase their wellness.
Don't try to change, start by understanding!: People with autism spectrum disorders have specific characteristics, behaviors, tastes, and ways to do things! The key is to understand their way to see the world and their performance without trying to make them change.
Adulthood with Autism disorders: There is no cure for Autism spectrum disorders! Once you get diagnosed it's a condition for the rest of your life, and research demonstrates that job activities that encourage independence can increase daily skills and reduce autism symptoms.

National Chocolate Mousse Day
DETAILS: We are not going to lie, at National Today, anything chocolate makes us go weak in the knees, and this is why National Chocolate Mousse Day on April 3 has got us all jittery with excitement. Imagine that smooth and silky chocolate taste settling in your mouth, slowly diminishing into sweet decadence. You can have it cold or hot, it tastes great either way. This French dessert used to be served at high-end French restaurants but, after globalization hit, the dish has become a favorite all over the world. You don’t need to have expert French language skills to understand the foamy delectability. Did you know that mousse was not always dessert? Mousse, which literally means ‘foam’ in French, was invented as a savory dish in French cuisine. Yep, you will find the best of both worlds here.
NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MOUSSE DAY ACTIVITIES:
Eat a chocolate mousse … or multiple: Oh, man! This one’s a difficult one for us at National Today — whether to eat one serving of chocolate mousse or several. Maybe the latter. In any case, the best way to celebrate the occasion is by indulging in the treat.
Make a chocolate mousse: The recipe is very simple with very simple ingredients. It’s the process’s pace you have to watch out for. But once you get the hang of it, it’ll be easy peasy lemon squeezy!
Try different toppings: The great thing about chocolate mousse is how versatile it is! It goes well with most toppings, be it fruits, sprinkles, or chocolate shavings … they’re all just so good!
April 3rd
National Find a Rainbow Day
DETAILS: April showers are going to bring more than just May flowers. On April 3, we get to celebrate National Find a Rainbow Day. Rainbows have always felt somewhat magical to us. And who can blame us? Rainbows are beautiful and a little mysterious.
On this colorful holiday we can really find time to explore and relish in one of nature’s greatest beauties.
NATIONAL FIND A RAINBOW DAY ACTIVITIES:
Try Finding a Rainbow: A slightly humid but sunny day is the perfect day to find a rainbow. Try standing with your back to the sun and looking to the horizon and hopefully you'll get to see a majestic rainbow!
Make Your Own Rainbow: Maybe the day is too sunny and you just can’t seem to find a rainbow. Don't worry you can make your own! A light mist from the water hose at a certain angle that catches the sun can create its own rainbow. You can also try making tie dye shirts or rainbow colored cupcakes, just to sprinkle some color into your day.
Celebrate LGBTQ+ Events: Rainbows are a source of pride and expression for the LGBTQ+ community and if you can’t find a rainbow in the wild, then celebrate your pride or be an ally.

April 4th
Easter
DETAILS: Easter is the single most important holy day throughout Christianity.
It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ — a central belief for Christians worldwide and the focal point of their faith. Religious scholars believe the event occurred three days after the Romans crucified Jesus in roughly 30 AD. Christians therefore derive hope that they too will experience a resurrection in heaven.
Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 21. For 2022, Easter is on April 4.
WHY EASTER IS IMPORTANT:
It's the holiest of holy days: A tenet of Christian faith is that God sent his "only begotten Son" to be crucified for the sins of humanity. Debates over the historical veracity of Jesus Christ's life, death and resurrection continue, but for most Christians, Easter is meaningless without a literal belief in the truth of this central story.
It brings the family together: Easter draws families together in the spirit of shared religious faith and celebration. It's a perfect time to catch up with loved ones we may not have seen in a long time.
It's fun for the children: For children, Easter has its own special significance beyond that of religious and familial duty. It's a day of sweets, treats, and play — not to mention the creation of colorful Easter eggs.
April 4th
National Hug a Newsperson Day
DETAILS: Warm up those hugging muscles, because on April 4, we’re showing our appreciation for news people in a big way. That’s right, we’re psyched to celebrate National Hug a Newsperson Day! This is the day we give huge shout outs to everyone who helps us stay updated—from major anchors like Anderson Cooper to that weather guy who correctly pronounced Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch without skipping a beat. (Look it up—it’s amazing. He deserves the biggest hug of all.) So get ready to hug your favorite news anchor, even if that means wrapping your TV in a super weird embrace.
WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL HUG A NEWSPERSON DAY:
It’s important to stay updated: It’s important to be an informed citizen, even when there’s not an election coming up. But let’s face it—it can be hard to keep up with the news all the time. And that’s why news people are so important. We love them all, from the writers that make us look forward to reading their articles to the news anchors who are entertaining (or cute) enough to make us want to tune in every week. They all deserve hugs!
They put in the work: Did you know that news anchors have to wake up in the ballpark of 2 - 4 AM every day to (literally) get the show on the road? And reporters have to be on call every minute of every day to report on trending news? These people sacrifice all of their free time so we can stay informed. We appreciate their effort and commitment to the news, and think it deserves to be commemorated.
They’re always professional: News people put aside their personal opinions and report on the news impartially, so that people on both sides of the aisle can stay informed. It takes maturity and intelligence to put aside your personal opinions to show both sides of an issue—even if you think one side is completely wrong. Plus, we’re sure they’ve developed enviable game faces. If we ever decide to play poker professionally, we want the face of a news anchor.
