Houston we have separation
Our separation from the Intel mother ship has been confirmed, and the team has started to disperse. In nine short weeks I will reach the end of what has been a really epic journey. Over my past 27 years with this team I have been very lucky to work with some of the very best in the industry. We have been through expansions and contractions, a management buy-out, IPO, four M&A’s the last one when Intel acquired ZiiLabs nearly 4 years ago.
Like my late father’s hammer that he’d had from being a teenager, despite it having 3 new handles and 2 new heads, he still thought of it as the same hammer. I look back at the team and feel it is still the same team I joined all those years ago, even though some have left and others have joined along the way. What has remained the same all of this time is the belief the team has had to do it right first time. Whether it was doing the first implementation of SGI’s IrisGL for a Sun system, which lead to the creation of the OpenGL standard, or designing the first 3D graphics chip for the PC, or award winning graphics cards, the goal was always to get it right first time. Time and time again the team punched well above its weight, and achieved far more than other teams of much larger size. We managed to design, layout and manage the build of multiple SOC’s with just 10’s of people not hundreds.
Through the many hats I have worn during my time with the team I have been fortunate not only to work with them but also to work with many great companies past and present around the world, both suppliers and customers.
Whilst it is sad that this great team is dispersing, I know that individually they will go on to do much more especially if they take with them the “right first time” philosophy. I wish them all the best with whatever their future holds.
It has been an honor and a privilege to work with you all.

8 年Hi Chris. A great comment. It was remarkable what the team achieved. Though its sad I never thought it would last so long. I left BT Martlesham to join Du Pont Pixel/3Dlabs/Ziilabs and one of my colleagues thought I was mad to join such a risky venture. It was like riding the back of a tiger, but my journey lasted much longer than his. He and many of those I knew at BT were gone within a few years. All the best.
Well sais Christopher. I never had the opportunity to work with this team, sounds like a winning one...I wish you all the best in your future ventures.
