Creating self-awareness during a crisis can be your game changer

Houston - we have a crisis on our hands & I don't know what to do

My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by COVID-19 and to those who are working all over the world to contain the virus. My team and I also want to assure you that you’ll continue to receive the services and support that you need as we help you navigate these uncharted waters.

During such unpredictable times, emotional intelligence (EQ) skills and reminders can be very helpful in developing the focus, productivity, and emotional well-being that we all need. To help you manage the ebbs and flows of emotions you may be encountering, I wanted to share two practical strategies I found from Dr. Jean Greaves and Dr. Travis Bradberry. I believe you will find these just as helpful as I did.

Self-Awareness Strategy: “Get to Know Yourself Under Stress.”

You can benefit from spotting the first signs of stress. Remember that the mind and the body have their own unique voices. Through emotional and physical cues, the mind and the body tell you when it’s time to attend to them and when to take a break. In the next week, try to notice when you feel distracted or have trouble concentrating. You may find that stress upsets your stomach, while others may be prone to headaches, canker sores, or back pain. Tuning into these voices can provide you with a healthy type of self-awareness. Let it serve you, and listen to your body’s cries for attention. Notice these signals, and recharge your emotional battery. One recharge strategy to try four times each day is provided below.

Self-Management Strategy: “Put a Mental Recharge Into Your Schedule.”

If you are able, get up and stretch every now and then. Try moving to a standing position from a sitting position in a chair without using your hands. Do this slowly ten times in a row or more if your health permits. You will notice that this will elevate your heart a bit and get you breathing more deeply. It will give your brain an oxygen boost and allow for a bit of movement on days when stress won’t do you much good.

Renee, I am a believer in the mind and body telling me to listen and take a break. Meditation and some form of exercise are my ‘daily dose of medicine’.

I've been doing the "should" for months... now with the stay at home orders, I really focused on sticking to my morning routine with includes mental and physical health... and I'm WAY better for it <3

Love it!! You align with so much what I’ve been saying over the past couple months. Schedule heart check ins and make sure you are allowing yourself to transform by tuning in to how you’re responding and not responding. Love seeing content that values EQ!

I love - put a mental recharge into your schedule. I am on day 60 and just made time for this in my schedule on Monday. Today is day three of implementation and I am about to head out on my walk to recharge!
