Record 32,121 homes commenced in the first five months of 2024
Commencement figures published on 20 June showed that were almost 2,000 new homes home starts last month.?
The figures also?showed:
Independent report finds pace of housing growth in Ireland the?fastest in Europe
EY-Euroconstruct forecasts?that?Irish housing completions will be strongest among 19 European? countries
On 11 June,? the latest report from?Euroconstruct,?a research network specialising in construction market analysis across?Europe, forecast that Irish housing completions will be the strongest among 19 European?countries.?
The report also found that:
200 new social homes open across Dublin City Council
On 31 May and 10 June respectively, Minister O'Brien and departmental staff were on hand for the official opening of two new social housing developments at different locations in Dublin City Council. Both developments have been developed thanks to the?Capital Advance Leasing Facility (CALF) programme.
Minister O'Brien officially opened 153 top quality new homes at?Elanora Court, Dublin 12.??
The homes have been delivered in conjunction with Respond Housing, Dublin City Council and the?Housing Finance Agency. They?are part of an ‘urban village concept’ approach, which includes community facilities courtyard gardens and playgrounds.
Supported by Dublin City Council and?Circle Voluntary Housing Association, 47 new homes were opened at Railway Court, Dublin 1.
The development is located on the former Liberty House site in Dublin’s city centre and?includes a mix of one, two & three-bedroom homes.?The project also includes a new community facility on the ground floor.?
More social and affordable homes becoming available to rent and buy
A central pillar of Housing for All is to increase delivery of different forms of housing to meet different housing needs. This includes new homes to buy or rent at below market rates, as well as social homes. New cost rental and affordable purchase homes?have been launched recently with others opening for application shortly.

New loan launched?to help turn vacant or derelict buildings into new homes
The new?Local Authority Purchase and Renovation Loan?(LAPR) received Government on 5 June.?
The loan, which is an expansion of the Local Authority Home Loan,? will support both the purchase and renovation of homes which are eligible under the existing Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant.
The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant has been incredibly popular with over 8,100 applications received under the scheme so far. Now, with the LAPR, a first time buyer who wishes to turn a vacant or derelict property into a new home can receive a loan to fund both purchase and renovation works.
Rapid progress being made on new Shanganagh housing development??
One of Housing for All's flagship developments,?Shanganagh, Shankill Co. Dublin will soon deliver its first homes.?
Developed in association with the Land Development Agency and Dun Laoighaire-Rathdown County Council, construction started in September 2022 and?it will provide over 300 cost rental homes with the first tranche due for completion later this summer.?
New figures show 50,000 homes prevented from bulk sale
On 18 June, Minister O'Brien revealed the latest update on the progress of the planning measures he implemented three years ago aimed at boosting home ownership and curbing the bulk purchasing of homes.
It showed that?49,828 houses and duplexes received planning permission with conditions restricting bulk buying and that almost?20,000 of the homes were recorded as ring-fenced for traditional home buyers? in the last year alone.
Minister O'Brien said:?
“This data confirms that the interventions have worked and have helped level the playing field for traditional home buyers, including first-time buyers .”
Funding of?€93m for housing adaptation grants
On 30 May, the allocations to local authorities for the Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People were announced.?
This year:
The grants?assists with the necessary adaptations, repairs or improvement works in order to make the accommodation more suitable to the needs of older and disabled people supporting them to live in their homes.
Advertising campaign promotes housing?supports?
An advertising campaign entitled??‘Doors Open’, was launched on 27 May and ran for four weeks, to Sunday, 23 June.
The campaign ran across social, digital, and radio, highlighting and informing people about the available Government housing schemes and supports that can help you to purchase a home or source long-term rental accommodation at lower rates.
