Housing affordability was also a problem in the 1950's.

I stumbled across this great article from the Sunday Telegraph dated the 15th of January 1950 on www.realestate.com.au. The article talks about the fact that only one in five married couples will be able to afford a home in Sydney. The issues they were facing, included rising property prices, slow wage growth, and tough competition for the homes that were available. Sound familiar?

Areas like St. George and anything past the Inner West were considered far away. Today we consider them within easy distance to the Sydney CDB. Much like today, first home buyers or people looking for larger blocks of land are moving further from the city.

Transport and road links will continue to improve, regions will continue to become self-sufficient hubs and property prices and affordability issues will continue to dominate news headlines.

Buying a home (particularly your first) is never easy, you need to save the deposit and the associated purchasing costs. The mortgage needs to be covered every week, along with your weekly bills and living expenses. A lot of people trying to purchase a home today feel hard done by - yes you will have to watch your spending, look out for the items on sale and cut back on some things. But so did your ancestors and most likely your children will too. And no doubt the media will still be publishing headlines on the housing affordability issues over the next 50 years.
