Househunting without the headaches

Have you ever felt anxious about finding a new house and moving over? Then you know from experience why moving house is ranked in the top-5 of most stressful life events.

A former colleague faced that challenge last year. He and his wife urgently wanted to relocate because they spent way too much time commuting to work. I was surprised to hear about their ambitious goal to obtain a new house within six months. Knowing the wildly overheated Dutch housing market, I considered their plan beyond ambitious. Unreasonable sounded more appropriate given the crowded area they aimed to move to.

When we met to catch up, I wanted to hear everything about their househunting project.

He told me he was inspired by the Journey Planner tool in my book A Scrum Master's Guide to Happiness. He's an experienced Scrum Master, so he is already familiar with the powers of visual planning boards at work. This time, he decided to apply this planning board at home to organize all househunting activities for his wife and himself. Given the ambitious timeframe, they wanted to get a grip on their challenging project.

Of course, the visual planning board was convenient for them to oversee and track progress. But one sentence struck me when he stated, "I also have better conversations with my wife." Making their planning and actions transparent on the board invited them to be open to expressing their mutual expectations. In doing so, they could resolve any mismatches in perceptions and stay aligned on their goal. That's how they managed to find a new home that fit their needs and within the set timeframe!

I was very happy for them, not only for finding a new home so quickly but even more so for succeeding as a couple in an adventure that can easily create much stress in a relationship.

How about you?
