More than 600 jobs are at risk at House of Fraser warehouses, according to a union. New owner Mike Ashley is disputing a £30m unpaid bill issued by depot operator XPO Logistics, putting warehouse workers on a 45-day consultation notice as of Friday. The warning comes just days after it emerged administrators considered selling House of Fraser for just £1 before securing Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley’s £90m offer. Shares in luxury handbag maker Mulberry plummeted on Monday after it warned the collapse of House of Fraser will damage profits.

The government has been forced to seize immediate control of a Birmingham Prison from contractor G4S. The Ministry of Justice stepped in after a report revealed ‘disturbing’ levels of drinking alcohol, drug use and violence at HMP Birmingham. It is believed to be the first time government has intervened in a privately-run UK prison in this way. Contractor G4S was awarded a 15-year contract to operate Birmingham Prison in 2011. G4S came under fire in 2012 for failing to supply enough security guards for the London Olympics.

KPMG has been fined more than £2m over its audit of fashion retailer Ted Baker. The accounting firm admitted misconduct after the Financial Reporting Council heard auditors signed off on numbers calculated by consultants who also worked for KPMG, calling its independence into question. The Big Four accountancy firm was fined £3.15m in June for its work on insurance technology company Quindell’s accounts. KPMG remains under investigation over its work for collapsed outsourcer Carillion.

The UK will allow EU citizens to stay even in the case of a no-deal Brexit, according to Cabinet papers seen by The Telegraph. The 3.8 million EU migrants currently living in Britain will continue to have access to healthcare, benefits and pensions. Details of the offer will be outlined in one of 84 technical papers about a no-deal scenario, to be released later this week.

Ofcom has launched an investigation into potential cartel activity in the parcel delivery sector. The communications watchdog will assess competition concerns which could result in “prevention, restriction or distortion of competition” and subsequently breach EU law. The regulator has so far refused to name which companies or activities were being investigated. The move comes just one week after Royal Mail was fined a record £50m for breaking competition law.

Idea of the Day: Genius doesn’t always just spring up naturally, notes IE University President Santiago Iniguez. It needs to be cultivated — and that means hard work and structure.

“Contrary to the Romantic myth of the genius’s need for freedom and the absence of any pressure to produce, experience shows that being subject to a deadline, and even limited resources, can sharpen our invention and creativity.”

A terrible situation for those workers.

The colleagues that are at risk will be able to walk into a job as soon as they need..... Most of them worked for our company prior to the Take over, and we have already met back up with them and given the oppertunity of permanent work as soon as they need it. Obviously there are loses and no one wants to see anyone suffer or be out of pocket, but in an ever decreasing personnel supply, I’m sure everything will work out just fine! Anyone looking for opportunities-in or around the area, regardless on pay scale, please feel free to get in touch.

Very disappointed in the wording of the EU immigrant article. Of course people living and working in the UK should have access to the same minimal benefits we are!
