Focusing on the root cause of a projected 300,000 veterans suicides, 44/day, since 911 (crisis exponentially complicated by 110,000 overdose deaths per year in the United States, 90 percent of worlds opium supply coming from Afghanistan). What Is Moral Injury?
In traumatic or unusually stressful circumstances, people may perpetrate, fail to prevent, or witness events that contradict deeply held moral beliefs and expectations (1). When someone does something that goes against their beliefs this is often referred to as an act of commission and when they fail to do something in line with their beliefs that is often referred to as an act of omission. Individuals may also experience betrayal from leadership, others in positions of power or peers that can result in adverse outcomes (2). Moral injury is the distressing psychological, behavioral, social, and sometimes spiritual aftermath of exposure to such events (3). A moral injury can occur in response to acting or witnessing behaviors that go against an individual's values and moral beliefs. -- National Center for PTSD: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

House Foreign Committee launches landing page for submitting stories about Afghanistan evacuation.

Gold Star families of 13 killed in Kabul bombing learn that the terrorists were identified and could have been neutralized, but military leaders and U.S. forces were deployed without rules of engagement.
There are many sad aspects to this discussion:
1) Coordinating meetings with the NCTC classified terrorist group, Afghan Taliban (colaborating with ISIS, Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Haggani), leaving out the Afghan government.
2) Turning over the country to the transnational terrorist groups that helped plan and coordinate the 911 attacks, that facilitated the release of terrorists from the prisons, including the bomber that was held by the CIA for 4 years.
3) Despite the identification of the bombers and actionable intelligence, there existed no pathway to neutralize the threats, because no one had a ROE directive.
The mother of USMC Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui, had their other son Dakota commit suicide near a memorial set up for his little brother. -- www.14lives.org
Now the Gold Star families need to face the fact that their children's deaths were preventable and that they died needlessly.

Choosing Hardship Today for an Easier Tomorrow
Ask any Green Beret that worked with the Montagnards or Village Stability Operations in Afghanistan, if they ever can heal (develop resiliency) from operations where you had to lie to indigenous populations, who offered support and life saving assistance in return for promises of protection, only to watch them be executed, when political decisions were made to end operations.
Original mission with VSO in Afghanistan would have been SSTR in a Comprehensive Approach framework. Not cut and run, and abandoning the entire VSO metric in SOCOM (2014-August 2021), and the playing make-a-believe that damage control in crisis response is a nobel cause.
300,000 veterans suicides, 44/day since 911 forces us to reflect on moral injury caused by the lack of human rights and legitimacy in training and advisory mission.
