House of Federation elects new Speaker, Deputy Speaker

ADDIS ABABA – The House of Federation (HoF) elected new Speaker and Deputy Speaker in Adem Farah and Etsegenet Mengistu respectively.
Keria Ibrahim, Speaker of the HoF announced her resignation on Monday. Accordingly, the House, in its 2nd regular meeting yesterday elected Adem Farah as her successor.
Adem is from Somali ethnic group and has a Master’s Degree. He has been teaching in different colleges. He has also served in different public offices in various positions.
The previous Deputy Speaker, Mohammed Reshid has also resigned yesterday as he is from same ethnic group as that of the newly elected Speaker and replaced by Etsegenet Mengistu from the Guraghe ethnicity. Etsegenet has a Master’s Degree and served in different public offices.
The House has also postponed the Population and Housing Census. The Census will be undertaken within two years after the COVID-19 pandemic is put under control.
The House has also decided to form a provisional committee comprising five to seven HoF members to come up with proposals to respond to statehood queries in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples State.
