Whether you're the CEO, Hotel General Manager, or new Hotel Duty Manager, knowing how to work with others is a key part of being successful as every Hotel Manager.
Knowing how to work with others is a broad topic that covers what it means to develop, organise, problem-solve and grow the employee side of the Hotel. We must all remember that putting in the effort as a Hotel Manager can have a massive impact on reducing the staff turnover rate or not.
People management often starts with listening and listening starts before you think it does in a Hotel. Critical to listening effectively includes keeping an open mind and not jumping to conclusions before or during conversations. Never assume what an employee is thinking or what their problem is, or what the solution to their problem might be?
We must learn to separate personal problems from Hotel problems. Personal problems might be an employee's individual workload, an employee's problem with their process, an employee's dissatisfaction with their team members or their performance or an employee's unhappiness with work due to a desire to change jobs.
Organisational problems might be teams unable to cope with demands of workload collectively, workflow problems frequently resulting in errors or delays Hotel - or team-wide, infighting or hostility between team members because of overall poor performance or simply employees feeling dis-empowered to take control of their work projects and career paths.
Hotel Managers need to use their people management skills to comprehend the organisational problems within their Hotels, while still people-managing to keep employees' feeling safe at work until their problems are truly fixed.
Remember to spend the time with your team to help them solve their problems. It is easier to approach your work this way, rather than have a high employee turnover rate in the Hotel or in your Hotel Department.
Make the effort – it will be worth it …
