Hot News about Energy Storage | August (Part 1)
As of the end of May, China has put into operation new energy storage installed capacity exceeding 12 million kilowatts
The State Council Information Office held a regular policy briefing of the State Council on July 26. Mingyang Liu, head of the Electric Power Department of the National Energy Administration, pointed out at the meeting that in recent years, the large-scale development of wind power and photovoltaic power generation in my country has promoted the growth of energy storage demand. With the support of relevant industrial policies, new energy storage technologies have developed rapidly, and the installed capacity has expanded rapidly. As of the end of May this year, the installed capacity of new energy storage across the country has exceeded 12 million kilowatts, and the emphasis on new energy storage has continued to increase across the country. At present, more than ten provinces are conducting pilot demonstrations of new energy storage, which has promoted the rapid development of various technical routes such as lithium-ion batteries, liquid flow batteries, and compressed air energy storage, and gradually improved the relevant industrial chain system. In the next step, the National Energy Administration will continue to promote the implementation of policies, strengthen investigation and research, promote the resolution of problems and challenges faced in the development of the industry, and make positive contributions to the transformation and adjustment of the energy structure.

Focus on the development of the energy storage industry, lithium battery energy storage, and new energy storage technology, and improve the level of battery material industry agglomeration. Strengthen key technology research and strive for more than 3 provincial-level major scientific and technological achievements. Cultivate green energy professionals and introduce high-level leading talents and innovative teams.
2023 China's energy storage outlook: new installed capacity is expected to reach 17.7GW/41.1GWh
According to the current comprehensive analysis of the domestic energy storage project bidding situation, the progress of energy storage demonstration projects in various regions, and the demand for new energy distribution and storage, it is expected that the domestic energy storage market will maintain strong growth in 2023, and the new installed capacity is expected to increase by 128%, reaching 17.7 GW/41.1GWh. As of 2022, 20 regions have issued the "14th Five-Year Plan" energy storage installation target, with a total scale of 54 GW. Combined with the planning situation of various regions, it is estimated that by the end of 2025, the cumulative installed capacity of domestic energy storage is expected to reach nearly 80 GW. In 2023, Xinjiang is expected to lead the domestic energy storage market. Driven by the market-oriented projects launched last summer, many projects in Xinjiang have begun to purchase facilities and equipment and are expected to be operational this year. In addition, the independent demonstration projects in Ningxia, Shandong, Guangxi, Hunan, and Henan, as well as the demand for new energy distribution and storage in Gansu and Inner Mongolia, will also promote the large-scale implementation of energy storage projects in various regions in 2023.
France: French developer deploys mobile ground-mounted solar power plant
French renewable energy producer CVE has installed the first RespeeR Flex solar power plant on an industrial site owned by safety equipment manufacturer MSA Group. The 187KW installation will cover almost 10% of the total energy consumption of the MSA facility in Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne, Ain, France. The photovoltaic system adopts a detachable design, and the photovoltaic modules are placed on the ground and ballasted on the ground. Assembly of the system takes just 10 months, compared with 24 months for a traditional installation, CVE said. This solution greatly facilitated the verification phase within the MSA team, says MSA's maintenance and infrastructure manager Christophe Laurent.
Australia: Australian manufacturer launches 5.12 kWh battery for residential applications
Australian battery technology company Vaulta has developed the first purpose-built residential battery. The small energy storage system is said to be capable of 4,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. Vaulta says their residential batteries use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, which is modular for easy capacity expansion and seamlessly integrates with most 48V inverters. The battery has a nominal voltage of 48V and is capable of delivering 4.86kW of continuous power, the company said. It can operate normally in the operating temperature range of -20°C to 55°C. The battery measures 933mm high x 357mm wide x 251mm deep and weighs just under 55kg. Vaulta's residential batteries are designed and assembled at their Brisbane factory using their patented solderless battery box, which allows the battery's interior to be disassembled, recycled, and reused, and can be added as battery technology evolves new batteries.

US: Indiana's largest energy storage project to replace coal-fired plants
Indiana-based utility AES Indiana has submitted an application to build the state's largest energy storage system at the partially operating coal facility. The energy storage project will be located at the Peterborough Power Generation Facility. The planned battery has a peak output of 200 megawatts and is expected to output 800-megawatt hours at an 80% discharge level, the statement said. That means the facility can actually house 1 GWh of battery capacity, of which AES Indiana will use 800 MWh. The utility has signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with battery manufacturer Fluence, which will also lead the construction of the facility. The 200-megawatt generating capacity will be divided into two 100-megawatt units, each with the capacity to run continuously for four hours. Each 100 MW segment will be connected to its own 34.5 kV to 345 kV transformers, which will feed the Petersburg substation via a 345 kV transmission line. The project will occupy 26 acres of land at the St. Petersburg Power Station.
The UK's cumulative photovoltaic installed capacity reached 15.13GW
According to provisional statistics from the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the total installed PV capacity in the UK had reached 15.13GW by the end of May, spread across 1,334,453 installations. During the period from January to May, the newly added photovoltaic power generation system capacity nationwide was 479.5MW, a significant increase from 226.2MW in the same period last year. In May alone, about 60.2MW of new installed capacity was added. However, these figures are considered provisional and are expected to be revised upwards as more data on new operating sites is received. New installed PV capacity in May 2022 was 49.3MW, compared with a total of 70.8MW in April this year.
India installs 6.8GW of solar in first half
According to the latest report from JMK Research, India added 6,794 MW of new solar capacity in the first half of 2023, about 19% less than the same period last year. Among them, the installed capacity of rooftop solar energy is approximately 2,294 MW, higher than the installed capacity of rooftop photovoltaics for the whole of 2022. Meanwhile, installed wind power capacity increased by 166% year-on-year to 1,878 MW. According to statistics from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India, as of June 30, 2023, India's cumulative installed capacity of renewable energy has reached 129.6 GW, of which solar power accounts for about 54%.
