Ever had one of those days where your personal and professional life teach you the same lesson?

To continue on a story I told a few weeks back, my daughter Brynlin, usually great at owning up to her mistakes, got visibly upset when I asked her about the fan/extension cord debacle. Turns out, she had asked my niece to unplug the extension cord but didn’t double-check if it had been done.?

The irony is that on the same day I had this conversation at home, I had a very similar conversation with a frustrated manager dealing with an employee she had delegated to BUT just wasn't doing what was asked of him. It was like the universe was saying if you don’t see the lesson, here it is AGAIN.?

So in honor of my lesson learning, let’s talk about delegation WITH Verification - here are some nerdy facts to get us started:

??Improved Efficiency: Delegating tasks can boost overall team productivity by up to 30%, according to Gallup.

?? Reduced Errors: Harvard Business Review notes that regular verification can decrease the likelihood of mistakes by 50%.

???Enhanced Communication: Clear delegation and follow-up improve team communication and trust, according to a study by the American Management Association.

Now, let's keep going with this topic!

KINDLE THE FLAME??? Learn From My Experience

This incident with Brynlin, coupled with my conversation with a frustrated manager, highlighted the delicate balance of trusting your team while verifying tasks are completed. This is essential to foster accountability without micromanaging.

Why does this matter? Because effective leadership isn’t just about delegating tasks; it’s about ensuring those tasks are completed correctly to prevent burnout and frustration.

Practical Tips for Balancing Delegation and Verification:

??Set Clear Expectations: Ensure everyone understands their responsibilities. Have the person completing the task say it out loud or better yet put it on a task board.

???Regular Check-ins: Schedule routine meetings to verify progress. Weekly or Bi-weekly employee check ins are foundational to performance and success.?

??Provide Support: Offer the necessary tools and guidance for task completion. They can’t complete things if they don’t have the tools, plus it helps with eliminating excuses.?

?Trust but Verify: Always confirm critical tasks, especially if they’re new. Remember it takes time for people to learn.?

??Timely Follow-ups: Address issues as they arise to prevent bigger problems.?

Prevent stress and ensure smooth operations by balancing trust and verification. It could save you from a lot of headaches, and maybe even a house fire!

Stoke the Fire????Balancing Trust and Accountability

Our client's story echoes this need for balance. One frustrated manager dealt with an employee who wasn’t completing delegated tasks. The solution? Implementing a system of clear expectations, support, and verification to foster accountability.

Case in Point: One manager effectively managed delegation by implementing regular check-ins and establishing clear standards, ensuring tasks were completed without micromanaging. She utilized Team Task Boards and increased check-ins to track the employee's progress more effectively.?

Additionally, she acknowledged the employee's personal struggles and rearranged tasks to better support them. The manager had the employee prioritize performance coaching with us to understand his hurdles along the way. This strategy kept her team engaged and accountable, effectively preventing additional frustration and burnout.

Takeaway: Effective leadership requires balancing trust and accountability to ensure tasks are done right and on time.
