Hot of the May press...

Building off resonance from the last time, I am taking a moment to share some of what has been on my reading list this month. Lots of climate related ones, as I soak up the plethora of richness that is abounding in this space!

  • A just transition is essential as we build a more equitable world: This comprehensive mapping report commissioned by Laudes Foundation , in collaboration with Wallace Global Fund and Ford Foundation, that was conducted by the Climate Horizons team mapped out the global spectrum of just transition initiatives- outlining regional nuances, context-specific dynamics and how initiatives need to be tailored. Moreover, getting to a just transition requires overcoming "hidden handbrakes" that entail naming the invisible barriers and forming action coalitions.
  • Changing from the inside out: IUCN's recent report emphasis the importance of gender equality in environmental decision-making and policy-making, which supports improved economic outcomes, greater crop production, a fairer distribution of wealth and higher agricultural profits. Also Climate KIC outlines the importance of gender-disaggregated data when supporting and funding climate entrepreneurs, so as to design better programmes, targeted funding approaches and ultimately drive more gender equitable climate impact. Gender parity is an important goal in itself but as these reports sketch out, what we are building towards is going beyond representation to affect more systemic change and gender transformative outcomes
  • Centering power analysis and systems level approaches: Criterion Institute and Coralus sketch out what it means, looks and feels like to address power, bias and privilege in the investment process- which entails better valuing lived experience, providing clearer values-aligned transaction terms, removing structural barriers and more. Resilience Capital Ventures LLC shared its seminal work- Levers of Change (LOC) Project that aims to address racial and economic inequality in the US, which entails undertaking fundamental analysis of root causes, providing strategic advice to stakeholders and pursuing direct action to change systems.

Please do share what you are reading and hearing on the topics of gender finance, climate finance and impact investing more broadly. Happy weekend, happy recalibrating and musing.
