Hot List: America is Rebundling
You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today- Abe Lincoln
?
On this President’s Day (which is a federal bank holiday but is observed differently by state) you can watch historians discuss each and all with your kids…. and/or you can get some (house?) work done….but, before you look ahead to the week in earnings and whatever new bundle or merger is on the horizon, let’s use the holiday to reflect on America’s reliance on TV to come together.
Say what you will about red vs blue, almost an entire day this month America was focused and together (ish). Across this great land people were eating wings, dips and chips, drinking beers and sugary sodas, watching 80+ celebrity drenched commercials intently and commenting on Usher’s rollerskating (abs). Well done, America.
And well done, Paramount, NFL and Taylor Swift, who brought new audiences in the fold. You managed to get 120+ million people together, a TV record only outshined by the moon landing. Sorry, other things that were epic.
As Alan points out in his week in review, this proves a whole lot of people—even people under 30—know what broadcast TV is and how to find it when they need to.
Also winning was DAZN, whose clever plan to offer the game for just one Euro to Taylor Swift fans worldwide was even more clever than posting videos of Tay-tay chugging an SBLVII beer.
You may be wondering about this alleged joint streaming venture by Comcast and Paramount, which more excitable websites are already calling a “merger.”?
It’s not.?
It's likely a JV or some sort of partnership. In the current political climate any sort of merger between those two is sure to summon the? “antitrust” demons. But if real it is what we’ve been calling for since the fragmentation began: more evidence of the great rebundling.
