Following the success of this summer’s Commonwealth Games, officials representing international sporting federations have discussed ways of bringing more major fixtures to the region…
The event, branded a “sports economy day”, was held at the University of Birmingham’s Exchange building. Key themes like the strengthening of international relationships, innovative fan engagement and sustainable sporting facilities were all highlighted.
The goal, as laid out by the West Midlands Major Events Delivery Plan, is to attract a minimum of eight international events during the next five years. This includes the European Athletics Championships in 2026.
Figureheads from World Athletics, the International Boxing Association and the International Extreme Sports Festival were all in attendance, while a further 250 reps from governing bodies, global associations and professional sporting organisations all took part.?
Commonwealth Games minister Nigel Huddleston MP; leader of Birmingham City Council Ian Ward; and CEO of the 2022 Cycling World Championships Trudy Lindsdale were designated speakers on the day.
