Hosting a Football Watching Party

Hosting a Football Watching Party

Before Jerry Jones robbed me of my will to live, I hosted quite a few football parties. Despite the need to prepare, the obligation to feed everyone and keep them happy, they really were a blast. Here are some words-from-the-somewhat-wise if you’re thinking about hosting your own.

Pick Your Battles - If your team isn’t particularly good, don’t host a game against the defending Super Bowl champs. Target with what is considered to be a competitive game (or a blowout win), playoff games are even better despite the foul mood some will be in following a loss.

Have TVs in Two Rooms - There are 2 types of guests you’ll have: normies who want to socialize and have a good time, and freaks like me who want no distractions so they can obsess in peace. If you have 2 TVs in 2 rooms, don’t be afraid to separate the two.

Food - Your obligations depend on kickoff.

  • Noon - It’s lunch time. Ask people to show up at 11:30 so you can feed them something substantive prior to kickoff, and provide snacks throughout the game.
  • 3:30 - Snacks in the 1st half, dinner at halftime. This takes coordination given halftimes don’t last long, but I always provide a real dinner during the halftime of 3:30 games.
  • 7:15 - This is the easiest. Snacky food is fine considering everyone has likely already had dinner.

BYOB or Drinks Provided? - BYOB is usually the way to go, but regardless make sure you have bottled water, soft drinks, and maybe a small amount of crappy (aka: domestic) beers just in case.

Don’t Be Afraid to Call an Uber - There’s sometimes one person or a couple who overserve themselves. It’s not an easy conversation taking someone’s keys or calling a rideshare, but it’s better than bailing them out of jail... or worse.
