Hospitals Moving Towards Sustainability

While reading my morning paper (De Tijd), I came across concerns about the challenges the healthcare industry faces in balancing sterile operations with sustainability efforts.
Currently, many surgical materials, including disposable surgical drapes and even instruments, end up as waste. Additionally, hospitals consume vast amounts of energy due to electronic devices, heated rooms and offices, and transportation—including ambulances and patient visits. The use of anesthesia also contributes to their environmental impact.
The positive news is that hospitals recognize the urgent need for change, though the journey toward sustainability remains long. A well-structured action plan, supported by transparent reporting, would be a crucial first step. Sharing key performance indicators (KPIs) and aligning efforts with the Green Deal can help hospitals strengthen their sustainability strategies and progress toward climate neutrality.
Should hospitals adopt the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)? It could indeed provide significant value.
