Hospitality - Looking forward
The new-old, throughout the world, hospitality business and education are facing a new generation gap.
While the number of people and professionals in hospitality is decreasing, there are still profound differences between generations, and not that many willing to share their knowledge!
Old workers for new! A new game changer.
As healthcare improves and life expectancy increases, the boomers are continuing to boom in size and energy, but they lack interest in hospitality! Too much work and longing hours, poor wages, they say. Maybe is time for all of us to reset the plus and minus of our industry and see how we may continue to be fairly sustainable.
But the truth is, worldwide people over 50 will increase and while the number of those under 50 will have dropped by many thousands in the last years due to the number of new hospitality workers and a leisured society willing to work in Hotels and Restaurants.
The advantages are many by hiring matured teammembers;
Experience, many senior workers have already worked 30 to 50 years, so they have wisdom and expertise to offer, without mentioning service culture.
Patience, because of our vast experience, many of us have seen it all and done it all, so we’re better able to react calmly to stressful situations, plus we love being proud of what we do.
Work ethic, today’s senior hospitality workers come from a background that values hard work for fair pay. We’re loyal and dedicated, and we’re not always looking over people's shoulders to work for the next job opportunity.
Future, as we say it’s not so important to stay competitive, it’s more important to understand the work involved in the job we do and then go and sell yourself to an employer based on your talents. Believe me, there is still a lot out there in the hospitality world where we still do and provide to the younger generations.
Turning the page...
Stay as open to new, disruptive ideas as possible. Remain optimistic and confident that you are going to make it through the crisis. We need everyone to come back stronger than ever.
Rethink your hiring strategy, be an inclusive professional, and valuable experience for faster results. It is all but impossible to predict the future of new business returns, many of us are already crying for a long time depending on uncertainty and doubts, but believe you me like much other crisis, humans have always turned the game around and at this time is no different.
Hospitality is looking forward, employment still being uncertain at this time, many hospitality candidates and professionals are weighing out possible outcomes and options, but if needed step back to move forward. We will need everybody. Our best resource is to cultivate our singular abilities of imagination, creativity, and innovation. Eduation is the key.
