Hospitality Management - An art or science?

In the course of time, a number of management gurus have claimed that management is not a profession but one needs to be a professional to be a good manager. This claim has brought about different opinions and ideas. Experienced and successful managers who have made it to top positions through the ranks, base their successful career on hard work, enthusiasm and perseverance while others who have been trained, argue that education was their key to success. The truth is that one approach does not in any way exclude the other. A practical approach does not exclude a theoretical approach and vice versa. Blessed are those,### however who have merged the two approaches in building their career.

Like any other areas of management, hospitality management has today become more complex and demanding. Paying guests have increased their expectations, employees have become more demanding and competition has become more fierce. In a nutshell Hospitality Management has become a complex domain with different stakeholders expecting the best from each other.

Hospitality is one of Malta's key economic pillars and needs to be nurtured and looked into professionally by professionals. Managers working in the hospitality industry are today exposed to a range of issues on daily basis. They need to be good entrepreneurs, leaders and financial controllers on one hand and sociologists, anthropologists and potentially psychologists on the other. The job is complex yet rewarding.

IDEA Leadership & Management Institute will the launching the first M.Sc in Hospitality Management in October 2018.
