Hospice Care Week - Charity Shops Finds
We loved meeting Alison Gittins , Sally Dixon and Graham Soult at our shops this month, celebrating Hospice Care Week by choosing their own #CharityShopFinds.
Alison, CEO of Durham Business Group, confessed that years ago she'd be dragged along to charity shops by her mam and sister and would find herself waiting outside for them. Now she's a convert and loves taking a look and seeing what bargains can be found. She couldn't resist the blue beret that perfectly matched her colourful style. For over 40 years Durham Business Group have supported and championed businesses in our region, and Alison always helps to shine a light on our Hospice and what we do.
Sally, freelance arts worker, is a regular in our shops. She told us: "St Cuthbert's shops in Durham are literally on the next level!"
Previously described by ITV as a "North East Mary Portas", Graham has championed our shops for many years and is passionate about the high street, working hard to support businesses in our community.
In recent years, his consultancy CannyInsights.com has managed the "Shop Chester-le-Street" campaign, providing marketing and mentoring support to businesses in the town, with the project promoted on the colourful lamppost banners that hang across the town centre. St Cuthbert's Hospice Chester-le-Street Shop is one of the many local business people who has benefited from Graham's expertise, support and encouragement over the years.
“The St Cuthbert's Hospice Shop in Chester-le-Street is one of my favourite businesses in the town. The shop always get involved whenever the Chester Le Street Business Association is running an event or competition, such as the annual Christmas Window contest, and after 27 years of successful trading the shop has established itself as a really important and active part of the town's business community."
"When I’m out and about in charity shops I always head to the book sections, I love non-fiction and especially local history, so when I saw this on the shelf it really jumped out at me! The book is from 1953 and this edition was published in 1969! I scanned through the pages and even found a section on Chester-le-Street. The paragraph starts with:
'No place in the county can boast a history longer than this small but busy town, situated where the Con Burn meets the River Wear, six miles north of Durham.'

...very fitting for my visit and as my charity shop find!”
Without amazing supporters plus our lovely customers, donors and volunteers, we couldn’t provide the free compassionate care people in Durham so vitally need - so thank you!
