Horseshoe Bend - A Natural Wonder

Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado river is one of the most grand and spectacular natural wonders in southwestern United States.?It is an entrenched meander located below the canyon dam in Page, Arizona. Standing on the edge of the meander watching the sun going down, you will be completely overwhelmed and succumbed by the nature’s greeting of beauty, magic, wonder, and awe. The cover photo was taken when I visited the Horseshoe Bend first time in 2012. Like all meanders, the bends on the Colorado river are shaped due to a cycle of erosion and deposition. First, the outside of the bend – where the water flows fastest – is worn away. This eroded rock and sediment is then deposited by the slower flowing water inside of the bend. The continuous erosion and deposition causes the river to meander and migrate downstream.

Dramatic landforms like Horseshoe Bend emerged when land under a meandering river is uplifted by tectonic forces and giving it additional power to erode downward into its sandstone rock bed.?With a prolonged process continuing over hundreds of thousands of years, the river eventually become entrenched at the base of a canyon, creating this mysterious and remarkable scene for us to absorb.

The dynamic and active transformation of nature, combining with the fleeting moment of our time on this planet, makes each moment truly a unique and cherishable gift. While nature fills our hearts with awe as it showcase its mighty presence in its subtle yet spectacular way, let’s all take a deep breath and enjoy the interconnectedness and interdependence between nature and human spirit.
