?Horse's Behinds and Unintended Consequences

This short article by Dr. Joerg Storm traces?how a decision made by a Roman engineer two millennia ago had profound consequences on the design of the Space Shuttle.?

This very short post shares the story of?how long ago the size of a horse’s behind dictated the design of the space shuttle .

What small choices are you making today that will lead to profound unintended consequences?

Collins on Chaos

The past two years might be described in any number of ways, but most would agree that “chaotic” should be high on the list of relevant adjectives. The pandemic and the government’s response, supply chain challenges, the War for Talent, Work from Home and other events have made for the most challenging leadership environment in decades.

Jim Collins of “Good to Great” fame was interviewed by Chief Executive Magazine for his insights?on great leaders’ response to chaos. This is Collins at his best.

Stop what you’re doing and absorb Collins’ thoughts on Thriving in Chaos .

The Zero Talent Test

Talent is, sadly, not distributed equally.?But there are significant aspects of performance that are under our complete control requiring neither talent nor training. They are simply choices. Share the following with your employees…and be sure you’re modelling these choices.

10 Things that Require 0 Talent

The Professional’s Mindset

And while we’re on the topic of performance,?“one aspect is mindset—specifically is the difference between amateurs and professionals.”

“Amateur” and “professionals” are words we often use freely in describing performance (especially the performance of others), but how can we see the difference playing out in the workplace?

This brief article clarifies? The Difference Between Amateurs and Professionals ?(and includes some links for further reading).

?“A Life of Climb”…Is it for You?

I have a coaching practice and also facilitate two Vistage groups. In past newsletters, I've extolled the virtues of Vistage speakers. Many of you hear about Vistage and its superb speaker programs but have never experienced these workshops. On Friday, October 22 you’ll have a tremendous opportunity to do so during our next Vistage “CEO Climb Event”?from 10 am to 11:30 am CST.

Vistage Speaker Chalmers Brothers will present “Better Leadership, Conversations and Results for CEOs.”??Long a favorite on the Vistage Speaker circuit, he has presented to CEO peers in Vistage over 700 times.

You’ll also meet O’Brien Industrial Holdings CEO, Brian Osborne, a 17-year Vistage member,?who will share with you why he has made Vistage a priority, month after month, year after year.??

Click here for a 90 second preview and to register ?for this unique 90-minute event.

Econ Recon

Not Yet: Brian Wesbury’s recent blog post explains why he thinks there’s?No Recession, Yet . ?Brian Beaulieu of ITR Economics offers a?Bond Yield Update ?and overview of other data that suggests??“we don’t see that broad based recession, not yet.”

Check out Dr. Wesbury’s high?frequency data tracker for the week ?for helpful year over year comparisons of key economic data.

I will be distributing Vistage’s CEO Confidence Index this week. Since 2003, the Vistage?CEO Confidence Index has been an accurate predictor of future GDP and growth. If you would like to receive a copy of this quarterly research (Q3 2022), please click here .

Feel free to reshare this week's newsletter. I also distribute it via email and am happy to add your customers, vendors, and other colleagues to my distribution list. Thanks for reading.

Wishing you a productive week!

Helping SMBs insource growth plan execution without a full-time PMO using the Executagility Model?.

This one struck me: "Amateurs have a goal. Professionals have a process." When I first started consulting, I was open to doing whatever the client needed - relying on my "Invention/Galvanizing" to figure out how to do it (did not have language of The Six Types of Working Genius at the time, but looking back, that's what I counted on). As AJC has grown, we have established standard processes for what we do best (ERP Selection and Implementation and our Agile Execution Model) - and we continuously refine, improve, and expand on them. What a difference - now we can scale, and it's not just me doing it.

"Talent is, sadly, not distributed equally." Reminds me of research I reread as I'm getting ready for our free 5-day 13X Your Sales Challenge next week. When they looked at "average" sales people, it didn't matter what their sales style was. As the research found, "Mediocrity comes in multiple flavors."
