Horse Racing Round-Up
Morning guys, in this Horse Racing Round-Up we discuss an old stayer we think is being primed for a huge run at Royal Ascot, a Ralph Beckett filly who could be a young stayer to follow and what is next for Irish 1000 Guineas winner Tahiyra. With this content, it is more feel than maths, but it is opinion based on years of horse racing knowledge.
ASCOT STAKES TARGETED
Ian Williams looks like he is lining one up for a tilt at the Ascot Stakes over 2m4f at Royal Ascot. The horse in question is previous winner THE GRAND VISIR, who won the race back in 2019 off a mark of 100. He then came back to Royal Ascot in 2020 for the Queen Alexandra Stakes over slightly further, finishing second and then came back for the same race in 2021, finishing third.
He then had 2022 cut short, but made his return in this year's Chester Cup finishing 9th off a mark of 97, having raced too wide and at the rear for most of the race. Yet he still managed to edge into 9th, beaten less than 10L in a race where it paid to race up with the pace. That was a cracking run given it was his first in over a year. Everything about the run had me thinking that they'd be hoping for a drop in the weights to go back to Royal Ascot. They've got that, in that he's been dropped to a mark of 95, so I'd be paying attention if and when he's entered in the Ascot Stakes and anywhere else he's entered.

DOES RALPH BECKETT HAVE ANOTHER STAYING FILLY STAR?
Ralph Beckett's UNDERSTATED finished second over 1m2f last Friday in Goodwood's Height Of Fashion Stakes. It was a good run in itself, but even better when looked under the breeding microscope.
Firstly, she's out of Nathaniel who imparts plenty of stamina in his progeny. But then you just have to look at her siblings to understand that staying trips are going to be her thing. He half-brother won over 2m4f over hurdles, while her half-sister was a useful winner over 1m5f. Now with this knowledge, go back and watch her run again and you'll see everything was happening far too quickly for her over 1m2f. This filly won't come into her own until she tackles 1m4f plus. And then given connections, you'd also have to think she could be pretty good over those staying trips too.
TAHIYRA MUST BE IRISH OAKS BOUND?
The Aga Khan breeds his horses to mainly progress in trip in their classic season. So I just don't get the idea that TAHIYRA is a short price for the Coronation Stakes over 1m at Royal Ascot. This Irish 1000 Guineas winner won that race in a style that would suggest 10f is easily within her compass and that down the line 1m4f will be too. Certainly her breeding suggests so - her half-sister Tarnawa was placed in last year's Arc and her dam won over 1m4.5f. So don't be too enticed to back her, especially at her current price, for the Coronation Stakes, instead keep an eye out for being stepped up in trip, possibly for the Irish Oaks and even for something like the Eclipse, where she'd get all the allowances.
