Hornsea 3 HDD Scopes

Hornsea 3 HDD Scopes

The Hornsea 3 project is to be the largest offshore windfarm in the world upon its completion, generating at least 2.4GW of green energy - enough? power to meet the average daily needs of over 2 million homes.

It consists of 320kV and 400kV onshore cables spanning 53km across Norfolk. This ?includes the ?installation of 97 HDD’s, of which VTS have the responsibility of Design and? the installation of 17 complex drills and the responsibility for the management, supervision, and delivery of 80? noncomplex HDD Scopes.

The drilling started in June 2023 and has overcome some serious weather challenges due to the extremely wet 2023 and the same for 2024 up to and including this month (November 2024)

The continued storm named weather has provided some frustrating challenges for the enabling works with regards the establishment of drilling stations. Despite these challenges, we have made excellent progress on the HDD and Cable installation Scope.

?Primary HDDs are the horizontal directional drills that are deemed of a more complicated nature due to their length, depth, the asset they cross or interface with third parties such as Network Rail and National Highways.

Of the 17 complexes, 13 have been completed by our 60t Rig including.

·?????? Several river crossing? rivers

·?????? One under existing offshore wind farm cables

·?????? One crossing Private Airfield

·?????? One crossing a? highway (full? survey monitoring undertaken)

·?????? 5 crossing mature or ancient woodlands and meadows.

·?????? Several of the crossing directly under or? bordering? SSSI

?????????????????? ???????

? A further 2 HDD have been completed by our 100t rig and crew due to the lengths.

·?????? One crossing a? private steam railway line. (full? survey monitoring undertaken)

·?????? One crossing a river and water ways

We have had to remobilize our 100 ton rig from what is referenced as HDD25 due to some horrendous ground conditions and an ecological constraint that restricts the drilling start date to the end of March 2025.

VTS are utilizing this delay to review the best drilling techniques and any redesign to overcome the challenging ground conditions at this site.

A Challenge has to have a Solution, its what we do.

Due to this delay we are we are now progressing with our penultimate complex drill referenced as HDD07 under a NwR major train line and the A11 near Norwich.

?Our 60 ton rig completed its work scopes and is now busy on other works in Europe.

Christmas is but a few weeks away, as is my retirement, but will say a found good bye in my final update closer to the site shut down date of 20th Dec

Stay safe,
