Horizons v1.2 - Making the magic happen ?

The alarm started buzzing. My eyes peeled open, groggy from a restless night. A subtle headache throbbing as I lay in bed a few more moments.

The sound of my 2 year old crying in the background broke through the haze—time to get up.

Potty training. He’s not into it.

My wife’s kind but persistent words of “You've got this”.

“Take deep breaths.”

“Just try.”

He sat, tried, and succeeded.

My wife, sitting on the bathroom floor next to him, provided him the support needed to make the magic happen — for him to break through the fear an uncertainty of doing the deed.

In that early Tuesday morning haze, the universe aligned to make potty training the ultimate lesson for growing a business.

Find your support

When you’re off on a new venture, it’s much harder to go at it alone. In potty training, it's that encouraging voice saying, "You got this!"

It might be your co-founder, a mentor, or even a business consultant, nudging you to take that risk, launch that new product, or maybe even advising you to pivot your focus.

Having that guide can make all the difference. It gives you the courage to make the magic happen, to push through the uncertainty and come out on the other side.

Celebrate small wins

Ok— stickers probably aren’t the motivator like they are in my scenario, but it’s a great example to regularly pick your head up and feel good about progress. I’ve noticed that very driven people are often heads-down focused on the next milestone.

In the grind of running a company, it's easy to overlook the small wins; closing a small client, receiving positive feedback, or even squashing a long standing bug.

Celebrate! These are your stepping stones to larger victories.

Guided learning

When my son was struggling, my wife provided actionable guidance. She didn't just tell him to try. She told him how to try. (Do you know how many times I’ve heard “Push your peepee down into the potty”?!)

Don’t underestimate the power of step-by-step guidance. For yourself and your team.

Similarly, as a leader, your role is not just to motivate your team but also to equip them with the strategies and tactics they need for the mission at hand.

Clear communication is your strongest tool here. Be that guide.

So when you next feel hesitation—be it doubt, fear, or just a cold toilet seat—take a deep breath and just try.
