On the Horizon
As a photographer who mainly shoots seascapes the horizon line, the horizontal divide between sea and sky, is almost always a compositional consideration. Sometimes it is clearly defined and at other times almost indiscernible but the one thing it always is, is level. One of my pet hates is a sloping horizon unless it is intentional.
Whether you choose to place the horizon in the top or bottom third of the composition or use it to dissect the frame into equal halves it inevitably draws the eye to where the two elements of air and water meet. But for me it is so much more than that.
For me it still holds the same sense of fascination and wonder that it did when I was a child. The horizon promises adventure and discovery of what lies beyond. It represents the line between what we can see, what is known and what we cannot, the unknown. It always makes me think of those first people who set out on the high seas taking a leap of faith that there was anything beyond it other than an infinite expanse of ocean.
When you think about it the horizon is infinite, it is an unattainable destination. However far we travel there is always a new horizon and something else, something new to discover beyond it. And in a sense, the horizon is a metaphor for life. However predictable our lives might be we never know what the future holds and what life has in store for us over the horizon. That is its enigma and allure, it promises everything and reveals nothing.
