Today I'm addressing a pervasive issue that's impacting businesses everywhere, an epidemic that's subtly undermining our progress and growth. It's what I like to call the "Hopium Epidemic" – a dependency on hope as a strategy for achieving business goals and objectives.
We've all been there, haven't we? Saying things like, "I hope we'll make our budget this year," or "I hope this task gets completed on time." It's a common refrain in boardrooms and team meetings. But let's be clear: Hopium is not going to help us grow our businesses. While hope is comforting, it is not a strategy. It's a feel-good "drug" that can lead to inaction and disappointment.
Breaking the Cycle
As leaders, it's our responsibility to guide our teams away from reliance on hopium and towards concrete, actionable planning. The first step is recognizing the role of hope in our strategic thinking and then actively working to replace it with something more substantial.
Creating a real plan of action begins with envisioning what we want our company to achieve – casting this vision into the future and then meticulously working backwards to the present, detailing the steps necessary to realize this vision. This process involves setting ambitious goals, yes, but also breaking those down into actionable plans that include regular communication and accountability.
Big, Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs) and Wildly Important Goals (WIGs)
I encourage setting a significant, overarching goal for your organization, something that can act as a north star for all your efforts. Whether you refer to it as a BHAG or a WIG, this should be a focus that rises above the day-to-day operations, offering a clear target for your team.

However, setting the goal is only part of the battle. The next step is crafting a plan that can realistically achieve this goal. This means not only listing the necessary action steps but also ensuring that the right people with the right influence are involved in the process. It's about creating a system where every member of your team can contribute meaningfully, leveraging their unique abilities and insights to push the whole organization forward.
Creating Accountability
One of the most critical components of overcoming the hopium addiction is establishing a system of accountability. This involves regular check-ins on progress, celebrating milestones achieved, and adjusting the course as necessary. Accountability ensures that every member of the team understands their role in the larger mission and feels empowered to contribute their best work.
A Call for Your Stories
The journey towards overcoming the hopium epidemic is ongoing, and I'm keen to continue this conversation. I'd love to hear from you about how hopium has manifested in your business and the strategies you've employed to combat it. Your experiences and insights are invaluable as we all work towards more intentional, strategic, and successful business practices.
Together, we can turn hope into action and transform our businesses for the better. Let's get to work.
Thank you for joining me in this crucial conversation. Let's keep it going.
