This Discusses Southold's Dr. Barton Skinner - Dr. Skinner was Southold Supervisor & ELIH's first board of directors president!

The November 8, 1912 The County Review had a column about the sixth annual meeting of the Suffolk County Medical Society where elections were held. Greenport’s Dr. Barton Skinner was elected Treasurer of that society.

????The September 18, 1925 The Suffolk County News published an article about The Monitors who gathered for a reunion. The article is titled Old Monitors Dwindle Island Vets of ’62 Still Gather For Annual Reunion. I have placed a link carrying the front page of this edition, where you’ll find that article. The name Dr. Barton Skinner is located towards the end of the article, and his name should have a highlight over his name!:

????According to The Scrap Book column by Clarence Ashton Wood in the February 1, 1945 The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman, “Howard Huntting was a notary public, as were John O. Ireland and Dr. Barton Skinner of Greenport.”

????That same February 1, 1945 article says: “Dr. E. E. D. Skinner, father of Dr. Barton Skinner, was Coroner of the County and at the same time Surveyor of the Port of Greenport. The younger Dr. Skinner was Deputy Surveyor.”

????In the Fifty Years Ago column that was in the March 31, 1949 The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman: “Dr. Barton Skinner was the Republican candidate for supervisor.” The April 9, 1953 Fifty Years Ago column read: “There was a heavy vote in spite of a stormy day, both parties getting out their vote. Barton Skinner was elected supervisor of Southold Town.”

????The April 20, 1972 The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman “focused” a column on an exhibit. The Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport opened an exhibit of what had just won “Honorable Mention at the recent Annual Convention of the N Y Medical Society.” It was titled An Education Experience in Historic Medicine. This is “so relative, folks,” as “the exhibit focusezj3nl9r5 on African plants collected and preserved by Ezekiel Skinner, MD (1777-1855), a pioneering physician in the east end.” There was a “Note to history buffs” in the column: “Ezekiel’s son, Ezekiel Erasmus Darwin Skinner became the area’s first full-time doctor when he established his practice in Greenport in 1828, later compiling a medical handbook for whaling captains. Of his six children, two of whom became doctors, Dr. Barton Dwight Skinner was ELI Hospital’s first president.”

????I was reminded on page 87 in Greenport Yesterday & Today ~?The Diary of a Country Newspaper:

“In June, 1907, the Eastern Long Island Hospital was opened to the public, the first hospital east of Mineola. Patients from the entire East end, including the South fork of the Island were accepted. Working for the support of this institution became one of the chief interests of the community and has continued through the years of its growth.”

????The April 24, 1975 The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman had its 75 Years Ago column saying: “Dr. Barton Skinner of Greenport, Dr. J. M. Hartranft of Southold, W. Y. Fithian of Southold and Harry G. Howell of Southold, were all re-elected to the Board of Health.”

The Mattituck-Laurel Library maintains a Suffolk Times Obituaries website. The date for the Skinner, Barton Dwight (Dr.) obituary is listed as April 28, 1916. I was made known that the obituary is actually in the June 29, 1917 Suffolk Times.

????I received copy of the obituary about “the good doctor,” and it wasn’t a very clear copy. But I can share some of the information I gathered:

“He was born in Greenport on February 24, 1844 to Ezekiel E. Skinner, M.D., and Mary Brown Skinner (Read). He was educated in public and private schools and at the Connecticut Literary Institute of Sheffield, Conn. At the age of 16 he became a telegraph operator, being the first regular operator of his native village. He also had many civic and political honors, having been a member of the Board of Education of the Greenport Union School for ten years, also president of the village for about two years, a corner of the County for a number of years, and supervisor of the Town of Southold for a period of thirteen years. In 1876 he was married to Emma Augusta Terry of Orient, and they had two daughters. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenport, of Edward Huntting Post, G.A.R., of which he had been commander and Quartermaster for many years, of the State Medical Society, of the Associated Physicians of Long Island {,} and of the American Medical Association. The cause of his death was a perforation and peritonitis.”

The June 24, 1917 The New York Times carried his obituary. He died at the age of 73. “… during the Civil War, he served with the 127th Regiment of New York Volunteers. After the war, he assisted his father, Dr. Ezekiel E. D. Skinner, in his work of Surveyor of the Port and then started the study of medicine at the Berkshire Medical College and later at the Hospital Medical College. Dr. Skinner had practiced in Orient and Greenport since 1870. For forty-eight years he had been a member of the Suffolk County Medical Society, of which he was a former President, and for the last thirty-two years {,} he was Treasurer of that society. Dr. Skinner was also prominent in Republican politics in Suffolk County.”
