Hopeful Mindsets for Veterans

Hopeful Mindsets for Veterans

In this issue of the Hopebeat Weekly, we're diving deep into stories, strategies, and science behind hope—how it can transform Veterans and their communities. We are excited to introduce you to our new programming we created for the VA Whole Health in Arkansas, and it is now available for organizations around the world.

Hopelessness?in Veterans

Every year, approximately 200,000 men and women transition out of active-duty service and return to civilian life. Studies indicate that 44 percent to 72 percent experience high levels of stress during transition from military to civilian life. Data also suggests that approximately half of those who recently separated from military service may not immediately connect with available resources, benefits, and services.

The good news is, we can now teach them ‘how’ to activate hope. Researchers have found hope can help veterans navigate the complexities of post-military service, including coping with psychological trauma and adjusting to civilian life. Studies have also found that veterans with higher hope have decreased feelings of loneliness and isolation, as they tend to spend more time with their social network.

Introducing Hopeful Mindsets for?Veterans

Our new Hopeful Mindsets for Veterans program includes an 8-module workbook for veterans with a facilitator guide that anyone can use.?

It is built using our Shine Hope? framework, helping to equip veterans with the skills to navigate challenges of readjustment (e.g., housing, employment, socialization, health, relationships). Facilitators lead weekly group discussions discussing the skills, and all share how they are using the framework in their own lives.?

A huge thanks to the VA Whole Health team in Little Rock, Arkansas, who believed in the program and got it off the ground with an innovation grant. We’re thrilled a group of clergy are going to start running groups with Veterans in Arkansas, and want to work with Veterans around the world so get in touch if you know any that might be interested.?Find out more .

In the latest episode of The Hope Matrix Podcast, we feature Thomas Harris , a US Navy veteran and the Assistant Director of Men’s Guest Services at Nashville Rescue Mission. He shares his journey and how he used Shine Hope skills to navigate many of his challenges, and wrote his Shine Hope Story. Check it out.

Thomas opens up about his struggles with feeling insignificant during childhood, the impact of losing his father to suicide, and the mental health issues faced by veterans. He highlights the need for transparency, supportive communities, and the power of hope to overcome trauma and despair. Whether you are in the military, an athlete, a parent, or a civilian, this episode is a must listen. Check it out.
