Hope springs eternal (on Opening Day)
Today is Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. I’ve loved Opening Day ever since I was around 6 or 7. I looked forward to opening day back in the 70’s and 80’s (yeah, I’m old) because it was a harbinger of the end of school. It means winter is over – or at least what we call “winter” in Houston. And it signifies hope. Every die-hard fan has a genuine hope that their team will make the playoffs on Opening Day. Full disclosure – I’m a die-hard Astros fan and I cannot wait for first pitch in a few hours against the A’s.
Opening Day 2021 is indeed like no other. The Mets won’t play tonight because of multiple positive COVID-19 tests on the Nationals team. Most major league parks will have less than 30% of their seats filled tonight. Some stadiums will have way less – the Red Sox will allow 4500 fans and the Blue Jays will allow 1275 fans. Yeah, this Opening Day is different for sure.
But the National Pastime has come a long way since Opening Day 2020. Which wasn’t in April. Or May or June. Opening day last year was July 23. And and the season lastedwas only 60 games versus 162 games. So today feels a lot more “normal” than 2020 as far as baseball is concerned.
What about your life? How is your 2021 different than 2020? What difference have the Coronovirus vaccines made in your world? Life seems like it’s slowly returning to normal – at least to me. And when I watch Oakland’s Chris Bassitt through the first pitch to Houston’s Jose Altuve in a couple hours, things will feel just a little bit more normal. GO ASTROS!!!!

3 年The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.
