Hope for a Planet in Crisis
Tony Rinaudo made a remarkable discovery that is literally changing the planet.
From the back of the 2022 Australian Christian Book of the Year - The Forest Underground - "Australian agronomists Tony and Liz Rinaudo arrived in Niger, at the edge of the Sahara, in 1981 to plant trees. Few trees survived in the hostile terrain, and those that did were cut down. While contemplating the futility of their endeavours, Tony discovered an embarrassingly simple method of restoring degraded landscapes without planting a single tree.
Farm Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), the sustainable system of land management that Tony pioneered, has revolutionised reforestation across Africa and beyond. In Niger alone, local farmers embracing FMNR have rehabilitated over six million hectares of ruined land and doubled their crop yields and income. Tony is a Right Livelihood Award Laureate and Principal Climate Action Advisor with #worldvision."
In this inspiring YouTube conversation with Rev Mat Harry, Tony shares some of the stories from "The Forest Underground". Reminding us that we always need to rely on God, check our assumptions and recognise that people with hope behave differently than those who have lost hope.
Proceeds from the sale of the book go towards FMNR projects. This truly is hope for a planet in crisis and those of us in the Western World can be part of the solution as well. Learn more about how here:-
Tony and Liz are an inspiring example of how theology can be done publicly through the self-sacrificial living of our lives. What tremendous signposts pointing to hope.
