I had breakfast this morning at the Tennessee State Fair Grounds. That may seem like an odd statement, so let me explain. I was at the inaugural Tennessee State Fair Future Farmers of America Ham Breakfast. That's a mouthful, but Chelsea Sanders, the current President of the Tennessee FFA, wanted to be sure we all appreciated the full name. Her vision is that one day the event will be so well known that we simply call it " The Ham Breakfast." It was an impressive event attended by an equally impressive gathering of state and local business and government leaders.
The keynote speaker was Joe Scarlett, retired CEO and Chairman of Tractor Supply Company, and Founder of the Scarlett Leadership Institute. Those who know Joe appreciate that he is a powerful speaker with an immense knowledge of leadership principles and their practical applications in both business and in life. Joe spoke about being a leader, and more directly about how to be a good leader. He was on point, and his message resounded with the audience. However, I don't think Joe will be offended when I tell you that he was not the most inspirational part of our morning.
Watching the young leaders of the Tennessee FFA conduct their meeting this morning filled me with a renewed sense of optimism about our country. Their collective poise, bearing, and attitude throughout the morning left those of us in attendance feeling exactly as they intended - as their honored guests. It was a privilege to both observe and participate with a group of young adults who clearly take their mission - part of which is to grow leaders - very seriously.
They ended the meeting with the entire audience standing, facing our flag, and delivering the Pledge of Allegiance in unison. What an uplifting way to start the week. Thank you to the Tennessee FFA for setting such a great example. Not just for your fellow students, but for the adults whose lives you touch as well.
