Hope, Optimism, Rebellion and Action

At breakfast, I could not get my mind right. I felt an uncomfortable juxtaposition - that my life was seemingly so fine. I’ve been accused of seeing the glass as completely full or overflowing and having a weak sh!t detector. That’s my blessing and my curse.
At breakfast, there were photos all around me that whispered a truth I knew existed but had not really witnessed. The “Through Our Eyes” installation at A Place at The Table is painfully wonderful. When cameras are given to those experiencing homelessness, visceral visuals and stories are exposed.
These local stories will tear your heart out and remind you how fortunate you are. These stories are unimaginable to me. I can’t even fathom the impossibility of not feeling secure. Not knowing where my next meal will come from. Where I will sleep. Not having healthcare. Losing my family.
When cameras are given to those experiencing homelessness, visceral visuals and stories are exposed.
And I am concerned that I/we are not doing enough. That we may be too busy to lend a hand. Or donate to support the amazing nonprofits doing the hard work. To smile at a stranger and be a bright spot in someone’s day.
These amazing stories are a reminder that there is a darkness all around us; and often, it’s within us. Leonard Cohen said it best: “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Am I the light? Are you? The answer is “yes.”
A “slacktivist” will like this post. An “activist” will tag someone who needs to read it, or even share it. An activist will take friends and family to see the installation. Along the way, you will support a “pay what you can” café that provides dignity to those in need through a healthy meal in a welcoming environment. You should discuss what is happening in our communities. Choose to do something. Donate. Volunteer. Get your business and your coworkers involved. Be a social entrepreneur and work with nonprofits to create innovative ways to make a difference in your community. Don’t wait for someone to ask for your help. Just make it happen. Infuse your life with hope, optimism, rebellion and action.

5 年It wasn’t until my second volunteer shift at APATT that I saw the upstairs community area and photo gallery. Enlightened, outraged, and inspired.
