Hope Never Dies is a new book by Rick Shapiro, launching November 7, 2017. I'm happy to say that it offers wholesome hope for patients given a terminal diagnosis, many who lived decades longer than doctors predicted!
Just how can it be possible to survive terminal cancer? After his father passed away from prostate cancer, author Rick Shapiro questioned exactly that. He extensively scoured the country for answers, consolidating his findings in Hope Never Dies.
In a vigorously researched endeavor, starts unraveling the puzzle of cancer survival. A wonderfully academic collection, you can get excited about transcending your preconceived notions on cancer! In search of a cure, walk beside patients as they find healing through novel alternative and integrative approaches.
In an organized and stepwise fashion, the book is broken down into three clear areas of cutting-edge wisdom and knowledge:
Part 1: In-depth patient interviews. Each patient's case history opens up and carries the reader down captivating real-life scenarios. It is rather surreal to read each chapter title for patient interviews, as each patient is introduced in stepwise fashion: name, type of cancer, year of diagnosis, and then the doctor's opinion. Chris' doctor, for example, stated about colon cancer:
"There are no alternatives. If you don't do chemotherapy, you are insane."
As a doctor, I particularly liked to read "the things doctors said". Some are quite dreadful, like the one above, making one wonder if doctors hear themselves when they talk. I'm embarrassed at the audacity and unprofessionalism of such comments, as I have never spoken to a patient like that. Having been "on the other side of the drapes" as a patient myself, I know exactly how the patients feel when the doctor is so hopeless, so I was screaming inside as I read such inexcusable horror.
Part 2: Five world-famous cancer physician interviews. These impressive physician interviews are comprehensive and academic, reflecting the latest in cancer research and offering further insight into the real lives of cancer patients.
Part 3: Eighty-three practical self-help questions to ask doctors before you choose an oncologist. Gain confidence by asking the hard questions author Rick Shapiro lists, including:
Can Stage 1 or Stage 2 become Stage 3 or Stage 4?
Is there evidence based on recent or past studies, or your experiences with other patients like me, indicating the potential efficacy of the treatments you recommend?
What portion of the costs do you think my health insurance plans will cover?
There's a special kind of newness and boldness one gains while reading the last section, which is exquisite and exhaustive. It is so comprehensive that it guides the patient through many very serious and truly difficult questions to ask oncologists. It empowers every patient to be direct and educated, and is directly applicable to many clinical situations of patient care.
False claims and outlandish cures are decidedly missing from this book, and author Rick Shapiro re-defines patient advocacy in his own professional flair. Get Hope Never Dies as a decidedly perfect as a gift for loved ones at risk or having cancer, as well as for those searching for life's pearls. Because these pearls will keep that ever-important rebellious voice alive in your heart to question conventional thinking. And that's a good thing.
