When difficulties arise, it is the master virtue, Hope, that helps us push through. To keep going, to possess the tenacity to continue even when it seems fruitless to do so, is the epitome of Hope. And according to recent research, this feeling may be more than just a state of mind – it may be hardwired into our brains.
In a study published in the journal Neuron, scientists found that a specific group of neurons in the brain may be responsible for generating Hope. These neurons are located in an area known as the ventral tegmental area (VTA), which is involved in processing rewards and motivation.
When the scientists stimulated these neurons in mice, they observed an increase in perseverance. This effect was especially evident when the rodents viewed a task as daunting; if the activity was not perceived as complex/difficult, there was no change in motivation.
These findings suggest that Hope is not just a psychological state – it may be an evolved response that helps us deal with difficult situations. So how do we take advantage of this fact: Optimize our biology & tie ourselves to a great self-identity.?
