Hope Comes with Strings Attached
My Sister Sleeping During One of My Mother's Orchestra Rehearsal

Hope Comes with Strings Attached

"We all in this symphony together." -Bjorn Maes

The movie Jaws would not be as ominous if not for John Williams’ brilliant soundtrack and that iconic, du-dum, du-dum.? And Star Wars would not be nearly as exhilarating without its equally stellar (no pun intended) soaring score. What is your favorite movie score?

Did you know that the orchestras that perform them often do them in ONE day of rehearsal, and sometimes ONE take? If you’ve ever played an instrument you too may find that completely impossible. My mother played in orchestras for years and they are amazing to me. The best of the best come together and each bring their own expertise to create a totally new brilliant experience to the screen and our hearts. But they got to that level with a whole lot of practice. We sometimes see people’s excellence and berate ourselves for not already being there. Remember, even the best of the best started with a single strum.

As we witness war, danger, depletion, disaster, political upheaval, and more, it is very easy to decide there is no hope, that we might as well stay the course for personal satisfaction while we can, even while the ominous “da-dum, da-dum…” soundtrack haunts our knowing that all is not well. After all, what can we do? We might as well just hit snooze even as the cymbals crash. But from those very soundtracks comes proof that we can be the change!

WE are the orchestra. We get to choose, right now, whether we will fall prey to hopelessness or take massive action, not out of fear and silos but from a place of considering what future we would love to be part of. We can create a tipping point for good.

If we all lean into what we feel most passionate about, and consider what our unique skills and interests might play in our current challenges “musical score” we can actually tip the trajectory from ominous to victorious. Hey, even the piccolos have power in this orchestra of global change. Trust me. But we can’t do it without rising to the challenge. Are we going to let special interests choose the tune of our future, or are we going to take action??

What would you love our future to look like?? What change would you like to see happen? What could you support, stop buying, write letters about, speak up about, vote for, and donate to? Small actions can add up to big change. Big challenges are big opportunities in disguise. Right now, you have a choice for the future we will live in. The score may be adding up fast, but together, we can mobilize even faster. When we hear hatred, we can offer peace and kindness. We can listen to each other from caring instead of fear. We can refuse to be part of division and derision. We can change the tune. There is hope. Be the change you so yearn to see in the world.?

I had no idea about ONE take! I was first and last chair baritone back in the days. The Jurassic Park them took us months to get right!
