Hope, April Edition 2024

Hope, April Edition 2024

By Javier Bermudez

At the beginning of my university journey at St. Edward’s University, amidst the unprecedented global upheaval of a pandemic, I found strength in quiet prayers and meaningful relationships that filled my days with purpose and hope. Reflecting on my four-year journey at St. Edward’s, I navigated numerous challenges and experienced significant growth and fellowship. Throughout, my heart and faith steadfastly guided me, always nurturing my purpose.

In 2020, as a freshman navigating university life during a pandemic, I faced the inherent challenge of connecting with others while living in a new place with no familiar faces. Taking classes online also limited interactions with classmates. However, fueled by aspiration, I was determined to reach out and form friendships. This effort paid off, as I established strong bonds with fellow students. Over the years, these connections have deepened, illustrating my initial intention to build meaningful relationships. Motivated by my heart and faith, I chose to experience living abroad for a semester during my junior year. During my four months in Milan, I fully immersed myself in the culture, which renewed my sense of optimism each day. As I visited numerous beautiful cathedrals, I was struck by the enduring beauty and rich history they encapsulated, standing resilient through the centuries. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds broadened my perspectives, while navigating daily life in a foreign country enhanced my independence. These experiences not only spurred my personal growth but also deepened my faith and enthusiasm.?

Working at the Holy Cross Institute has significantly enhanced my leadership skills and connected me with inspiring role models. Through both formal convocations and everyday interactions, I've witnessed the profound impact of intention. A guiding principle in this journey is echoed in the words from 1 Corinthians 13: “Love is patient, love is kind... Love never fails.” These simple truths have inspired me to lead with empathy and integrity, shaping my development as a leader.

Reflecting on my journey, I see faith, hope, and love as fundamental to who I am. Hope connects me to something bigger than myself, giving me courage. This courage, fueled by love, has helped me overcome many challenges. My experiences align with Hebrews 11:1, which calls hope and faith “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This verse has guided me, reinforcing that with faith, hope, and love, no challenge is too great. Every part of my journey, academics, personal growth, or career proves how these virtues shape me.
