Daily Reminders

The picture above is one of many similar images I see every morning from the east side of my school. The characteristics change with the seasons, but the view is always breathtaking. I'm exposed to this perspective looking east as I walk around the building to greet the kindergarten and first-grade kids and their parents before the bell. If I arrive before anyone else, this view always grounds me in my emotions and makes me think.

I think about my family and how the same sun is emerging for them each morning wherever they are. I think about how much I miss them, and I think about the next time we'll be together.

Furthermore, I think about my goals and I talk myself into believing once again for the new day dawning that I can achieve them, and how this beautiful, sunny sky is there to remind me.

Finally, I think about my day to come, and what I need to do to make sure it's a good one for me and also for the little and big people in my care. Then I say to myself, "Hope without action is wishful thinking."

This is the principle that Hope Alliance is built on. Our dreams can only become our realities if we take action to pursue them. I hold an open invitation in my heart for anyone to join me in strategizing hope and making dreams come true.

Among the resources we access every day to do the things we need to do, there is one we all struggle to find enough of. Time. Time is the deep fundamental. Membership

I'm proud to say that we have added over one new member on average every day since our H.O.P.E Alliance LinkedIn group was created. I believe we can confidently conjecture that there are several reasons for this steady growth.

  • People are struggling, and they feel hopeless amidst many realities that are outside their locus of control
  • People have dreams, but they're unsure how to achieve them... they're looking for collaborative supporters
  • People know that wanting something isn't enough to get what they want; they need to take action toward successfully manifesting what they want
  • People go to social media for connection, but they're often let down by the volumes of vitriol and disingenuous content

There are 422 members in the group. They're contributing vulnerably and authentically. They're having honest conversations about their hopeful futures, and the actions that could be taken to make them real. Furthermore, they represent an incredibly diverse representation from every corner of the globe and every conceivable walk of life. There are tens of thousands of years of experience represented within this intelligent and thoughtful group.

I invite you to share the group with your colleagues. Take a scan of your network and send them an invitation link. Movements like this one have the potential to change things, make them better, and do well by doing good.

Passion Projects

Grow Kids has been a fifteen-year journey in support of pre-teen kids from Central Alberta

H.O.P.E Alliance members are involved in numerous passion projects.

[ pash-uhn proj-ekt ]

noun

  1. a personally fulfilling activity or undertaking pursued in one’s leisure time for pleasure, personal growth, emotional satisfaction, creative expression, etc.

One of mine, historically known as "Grow Boys," is a newly branded initiative called "Grow Kids" and returned last year after a three-year hiatus from an in-person format due to pandemic precautions.

Grow Boys was, and Grow Kids is currently based in,

a learning paradigm that honors ancient ways of knowing. It frames a journey of discovery with four directions on what refer to as the "HOPE Wheel." Each participant is placed within a clan family corresponding to a color (identified by a t-shirt they will all wear at the conference.) The kids travel with their clan families throughout the day to different sessions that are based on one of the four directions: respect; understanding; relationships and responsibility. Each of these directions is centered around the concept of hope... an action word.

Much of this will likely sound familiar to many. It's interesting to note that although our project group recognizes the challenges unique to boys and men of all ages, we are also cognizant that the experiences we offer at our conference each year appeal to girls as well as kids across the gender-atypical spectrum. This is the reason we adjusted our offering. Our 'Grow Kids' Conference is open to all kids who choose to attend because they like our message, and they're excited to participate. This year, we expect over nine hundred fifth-grade participants and close to one hundred high school volunteer mentors for the day.

If you'd like to learn more about our project, please reach out via the LinkedIn group. We've supported similar events in places as far away as Nigeria.

Here's to a productive and rewarding last half of January 2024.
