Stop Side Loading!
The seven pictures in this post clearly demonstrate how damaging and dangerous side loading is. This 1/2" Grade 100 Clevis Self Locking Hook was side loaded with complete disregard to the proper use as prescribed by the manufacturer, OH & S and ASME Operating Practices.
ASME B30.10-2014 Chapter 10-1 Hooks...
10-1.11 Operating Practices...
10-1.11.1 Single Point Hooks states: ...
"Personnel using hooks shall be aware of the following:"...
"(a) It shall be determined that the weight of the load to be applied does not exceed the lesser of the load rating of the hook or the load rating of the equipment of which the hook is a part."...
"(b) Shock loading should be avoided."...
"(c) Load shall be centered in the base (bowl/saddle) of the hook to prevent point loading of the hook."...
"(f) Hooks shall not be used in such a manner as to place a side load, back load, or tip load on the hook."

Pictures one through seven show the fracture and deformation of this 1/2" Grade 100 Clevis Self Locking Hook from side loading.
Some Important Things To Remember.
1. Grade 100 Clevis Self Locking Hooks should always be loaded in line.
2. Always work within the working load limit (WLL) as prescribed and published by the manufacturer.
3. Never participate in the high risk behavior of side loading. Damage will occur and the practice is unsafe.
4. Shock loading should always be avoided.
Commit to never stop learning. Familiarize yourself with the manufacturer's directives regarding the hooks you use, the codes of OH & S and the operating practices of ASME.

8 年Although having never broken one, I am guilty as charged. No excuses either. Knew it was the wrong approach but went with it anyway. The forklift had left leaving the item to be lifted out of position to make a vertical lift as would have been the proper procedure. Got lucky, but still no excuse.
