Let’s talk about HOOKS for a minute.
There are lots of popular brands that have spent millions with teams of smart marketers using all of their creative juices for months on end to get their HOOK stuck in your brain:

The thing is, with the entrepreneur who is selling ourselves, it can become a monumental task to see our business as it IS let alone how it could be (better, faster, stronger, and more compelling).
Start with What is:
I have studied Vipassana meditation for years, even doing their 10-day silent retreat. Vipassana is the ancient practice of clearing the brain clutter, quieting the noise, and seeing what IS. It is SO interesting (and eye-opening) how challenging it is to see what IS. Knowing myself and KNOWING that is SO difficult for me to see myself is why I work with smart, trusted advisors, mentors, and coaches to help me.
This network of support helps me see what IS. Many of us CANNOT see ourselves, we are blind to what makes us different, unique, or special. That is why I trust my coaches and mentors to guide me through this very important step to selling for myself inside of my own business.
Which brings me to what I want to talk about: HOOKS.
There is no way to see our HOOK if we cannot see ourselves.
How can we know what is compelling about our offers or see our worth if we cannot see ourselves? I struggle with doing this for MYSELF too. I consult businesses all day long on this with amazing results but for MYSELF . . . it is SO difficult.
That is why I always have a coach (or two) that I am working with.
The big though many of us have WHILE we are creating our hooks is the BELIEF that we ARE different... that we ARE good enough. Many call this Imposter Syndrome, I call it self-doubt. Believing in ourselves and having someone else believe in us was the missing link for me.
What does belief and YOUR HOOK have to do with each other?
Let me share a little story…
When I first found out that people were making a real living online, I hired a coach. She had written a book about Homeschooling and at the time we were exploring that avenue, I had bought it off Amazon, and there was a link to her website for downloads. I ended up on her mailing list and she started to offer “free calls” to explore how to earn a living while homeschooling.
I listened to two webinars, booked a call, and then hired her. Her whole method was to find the Venn diagram between what I was passionate about, what I had experience in and what I could talk about all day. Then build a website and start booking calls, offer a 3-month coaching package where you meet every other week on Zoom and that was it.
There was a big problem.
Like many coaches and courses . . .? it didn’t address the ONE thing I knew to be true after starting, running, and selling two profitable businesses before ...you need customers first, customers now, and customers consistently otherwise you will go OUT of business.
But I paid for the coaching so I did the work.
I had a short list that met her Venn Diagram requirements. They went in this order:
1.Car seat safety (I am a BIG fan of the Car Seat Lady in NYC)
2.Infertility (loss and recurrent miscarriage)
3.Yoga (I have my 200 hour certification and loved the practice both on and off the mat)
And..well, I had a TON of experience in sales, but I really didn’t want to go back to that life. All I could think of when I said “sales” were the 90-hour work weeks, soul-crushing blows of entire teams getting fired and exhaustion.
...she and I ended our time together and I still hadn’t settled on WHAT I was going to offer...But after some exploration, exploring some group programs, and attending some events, what finally helped it all click for me was a strategy session with a coach I had met in a Facebook group.
In 30 minutes she helped me uncover my HOOK and frame out a plan to teach what I knew, ON MY TERMS.
The HOOK she came up with was rooted in what people THOUGHT was true about selling and what I did was so different when I taught someone how to sell.
HERE is the BIG piece...it had to be more than “free” and more than “good for you” and more than “good for your business”... it had to COMPEL, Draw in Like a Bug Zapper (without the fiery death) the RIGHT people.
So the idea mingled and marinated and swam around in my noggin….I stared at the blinking cursor a LOT…. asking myself this ONE big question….What’s YOUR Big Idea?
I kept thinking …” why should anyone care about this thing YOU’RE selling, Renee?”
I started to research. . . Look at Dave Asprey, founder of the Bulletproof Diet. Did he invent the keto diet?? NO. He is not a medical doctor, he’s a Silicon Valley investor who had gained a ton of weight, got interested in ketones. He then took the Atkins Diet and put his own spin on it. His big idea was “Put Butter in Your Coffee and Lose Weight”.
And it took off with the HOOK:
How does it make a difference to THEM, the person out there struggling with the thing you have the answer to?
You know “that thing” that comes easy to you, that doesn’t feel like work to you? How does THAT stand out?
Why should people care what you have to say or what your offer is?
Do you find it’s easier to see in others what makes them different or unique than it is to see what makes YOU different and unique?
Look at the big ideas around you...what is the FIRST thing that turns your head?
What is the thing that smacks you upside the head?
Why is someone going to sign up for a call with you, or your free download or free Masterclass (hint: it’s not good enough JUST because it’s free)?
And then take the time to actually show up?
Why is someone going to take their wallet out and spend their hard-earned money on you?
THIS is the burning question you have to ask yourself...this is what you should be thinking about and testing as you grow your business.
