Honouring those who have left a mark!

This month has been extremely hard for the DKMS Africa team. Two young patients lost their fight against blood cancer and at just 12 years old, both patients had the whole world ahead of them.

Both coming from humble backgrounds, the reality of blood cancer had been a financially and emotionally taxing journey for their parents and came with many ups and downs - as they clung to the hope that their children would recover. Unfortunately, that was not the case. ??

This is one of the most difficult realities that we face as an organisation.

Every 28 May, we commemorate World Blood Cancer Day by paying homage to, and standing in solidarity with patients, families and healthcare professionals within the field of haematology. Together, with your help, we at DKMS Africa are always working tirelessly to ensure that blood cancer patients and patients with blood disorders receive stem cell transplants and a second chance at life.

The inspirational stories of human endurance, the small acts that compound to make a significant difference, the resounding silent contributions of all financial donors that enable us to carry on with our mission, driving up and down South Africa and globally, connecting strangers – driven by the call to make a difference to realise a different future for patients. This is all made possible by you.

With your help and through amplifying the work which we do, we can work towards increasing and diversifying the donor registry and improving the chances of patients going through to transplant.

It is unfortunate that the story of the two young patients cannot be changed, especially due to not finding a matching donor. However, it is also because of your help that we are able to keep doing the work which we do and in turn giving hope to patients and their loved ones.

This World Blood Cancer Day, help us honour those who we have lost and their loved ones by encouraging your friends and family to register as stem cell donors. You can also continue contributing financially towards DKMS Africa so that we keep doing the work we do and help give other patients a second chance at life.

"Our mission is to increase the number of potential donors worldwide, enhance the ethnic diversity of our database, provide life-saving transplants to patients in need, and improve patient outcome" - Elke Neujahr - DKMS Global CEO

We continue to send our condolences to the families and loved ones of those we have lost while we strive to continue to bring hope to our patients. ??
