Honoured to Represent YRAACC at Canada's 2025 Black History Month Official Celebrations!
I was privileged to represent the York Region Alliance of African Canadian Communities (YRAACC) at the Government of Canada's 2025 Black History Month (BHM) Official Celebrations.
This year's theme is "Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations."
This theme resonates deeply with our mission to ensure that Black History is Canadian History.
Throughout the celebrations, I had the opportunity to attend key events, including: ? The Liberal Black Caucus event ? Canada's Official BHM celebration ? Networking opportunities with community leaders, policymakers, and advocates
Liberal Black Caucus Event
Connecting with Members of Parliament, their staff, and other community leaders committed to advancing Black excellence in Canada was inspiring. We engaged in meaningful discussions on representation, equity, and policy shaping, reaffirming our shared vision to uplift Black communities. Expanding our networks strengthens our collective impact and ensures the consideration of our voices when making crucial decisions.
Government of Canada's 2025 BHM Celebration
Hearing from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Marci Ien, and Kamal Khera about the government's efforts, including initiatives tied to the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024), was a reminder of the progress made and the work that lies ahead. With the second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025-2034) now in motion (https://tinyurl.com/2ts2tepz), we must continue advocating for sustainable change.
Notably, the government has committed over $1 billion toward programs supporting the Black community—a significant investment in our future. However, as history has shown, progress is never guaranteed. Current events remind us to remain vigilant, resilient, and committed to sustained action.
Networking & Building Bridges
It was a pleasure connecting with inspiring individuals, including: ?? Majid Jowhari, Paul Chiang, Helena Jaczek, Monique Dennison, Arielle Kayabaga, Meron Cheway, Richard Pinnock, Eldon Holder, Charmaine Simpson, Martin Reid, Jean Claude Munyezamu, Warren G. Salmon, and many more!
?? As we reflect on Black legacy and leadership, how can we collectively build on this momentum to create a more inclusive Canada? Let us keep the conversation going! ??
