?
Do you sometimes feel your impatience is your worst enemy, Micha?
?
I do.
I've always been terribly impatient and rather restless –?
and as middle age hasn't turned me into an even-tempered person,?
I am holding out no hope for old age to bring me patience either.
(Also, genetics: neither my grandma nor my mom mellowed out as they passed 80 and then 90 …)
?
That said, I know that impatience makes it hard for me
to appreciate anything I may have accomplished,?
as everything feels “too slow” and “too little”,
and I am already focused on the next thing anyway.
?
Sounds familiar?
?
Fortunately, it's a downside of impatience we can offset!
How?
?
By defining a success metric?
that's all about?our own progress.
No matter what our work situation –?
junior or senior, in corporate or self-employed –
most of us have a tendency to measure our success based on company KPIs:
revenue and earnings goals, key accounts retained and gained, projects completed, you name it.

But when times are tough in your industry,
or you're experience a particular strong bout of impatience or self-doubt,
frustration can rise exponentially if that's all you consider “success”.
?
By focusing on your own progress, you can add a success metric?
that is always fully in your control –?and don't we love control?!
Here are two questions to get you started:
?
What is a win you had
that was fully in your control?
What have you recently learned?
?
Maybe you'll have to tweak these questions a little,?
or swap in another one that focuses on, for instance,?
how much faster or more efficient you have become at certain things,?
or how much more complex the tasks are that you can handle today?
compared to last week, last month, last year.
Be creative to find probing Qs that work for you!
?
If you want to delve deeper into defining what success means to you
and set up your personal success strategy, I am happy to help!
