Honoring Women’s History Month: An Interview with the Women of Foundation Stone

March is Women’s History Month, and International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world on March 8th. In the month focused on the celebration of women, I wanted to celebrate the women of Foundation Stone. These women form the heart and soul of Foundation Stone, working directly with clients to empower them on their recovery journey or working diligently behind the scenes to make such recovery journeys possible.

Read on to learn more about the incredible work of the women at Foundation Stone Family of Programs.

Q: What inspired you to join Foundation Stone?

Haley Sola, VP of Strategy at Foundation Stone: Starting Foundation Stone with Marsha was a no-brainer for me, driven by the sheer inspiration drawn from our unwavering vision and experiences. From the very beginning, Marsha’s passion became the magnetic force pulling our core team into this incredible journey. I have been very blessed to have her as my mentor.

Brittany Brizendine, Chief of Staff at Foundation Stone: Working directly under Marsha Stone for close to 10 years at a previous company was a life changing experience, both personally and professionally. So, when she contacted me to join the Foundation Stone Leadership Team it was an automatic yes for me as I was honored and thrilled to have another opportunity to work under her leadership.

Q: How does your role contribute to the organization's mission?

HS: My role as the VP of Strategy is about translating ambitions into actionable plans, all while standing shoulder to shoulder with Marsha Stone, our CEO and our all woman leadership team at Foundation Stone. Contributing to the organization's mission is not just a job; it's a commitment to making a real impact in the behavioral health landscape.

BB: Since I am one of the first people new employees interact with, I help to establish the culture within our workforce from the beginning.

Q: As a female employee, how do you perceive the significance of women in the workplace, particularly within the context of substance abuse recovery programs?

HS: As a woman in this field, I see our uniqueness as a strength. We bring a creative edge and a holistic perspective that goes beyond industry standards. In behavioral health, diversity matters. Women add a compassionate touch, addressing the multidimensional needs of our clients.

BB: Women in the workplace, especially within the field of substance abuse recovery programs is vitally important. There is still so much shame and misunderstanding surrounding substance abuse and alcoholism as a whole, but it seems to effect women more silently until it spirals beyond control. Having such strong female role models, who are working a program and who have had experiences similar to yours, opens doors for women to ask for help and find freedom within a recovery program.

Q: Can you share a specific instance where being a woman has uniquely influenced your approach to supporting clients in their recovery journey?

HS: There's a profound connection between being a woman and our approach to client support. It's about creating a safe space, fostering empathy, and understanding. I've seen firsthand how this approach can be transformative in the recovery journey.

BB: Don’t know if it’s necessarily because I am a woman, but treating people with grace and kindness, without judgement, has had a positive impact on other women in the workplace and how they interact with other employees who are working a program of recovery.

Q: What aspects of Foundation Stone's workplace culture resonate with you the most, especially in terms of fostering inclusivity and empowerment for women?

HS: What resonates with me most about Foundation Stone's culture is the genuine sense of family. We're not just colleagues; we've become a tight-knit community. Everyone has a voice, fostering inclusivity and empowerment.

BB: COLLABORATION! From the Leadership Team down, there is a culture of collaboration and empowerment for every employee. Also, the many opportunities given for growth.

Q: How does Foundation Stone support the professional growth and development of its female employees, and what opportunities have you personally benefited from?

HS: Foundation Stone is a champion for professional growth. From mentorship to leadership opportunities, the company invests in its employees. Personally, I've benefited from a supportive environment that encourages ongoing development.

BB: There are so many opportunities I have been given by Marsha Stone for professional growth and development. Over the past now 11 years, I have been the Executive Assistant, Office Manager, Resident Receivables Coordinator, Digital Marketing Liaison, Business Development Manager which included overseeing and supervising all 3 revenue streams for the company, Human Resources, and now Chief of Staff. Whenever there was a need within the company, Marsha gave me an opportunity to use what little skills I have from previous experiences to develop and grow into the role to fill the need. Once I told her thank you for all of the opportunities she has given me to grow and learn to which she responded, “Thank you for taking them, because not everyone takes opportunities when they are presented.” It was so impactful, and it still is to me.

Q: In your opinion, what are some of the key challenges that women may face in the substance abuse recovery field, and how can organizations like Foundation Stone address these challenges?

BB: I touched on this previously, but women working a program of recovery while building a legacy to help other women will continue to lay the foundation necessary to address the challenges women face in substance abuse recovery.

Q: What motivates and inspires you to come to work every day at Foundation Stone, particularly in your role within the recovery program?

HS: Every day at Foundation Stone is a new opportunity to contribute to something meaningful. The camaraderie within our team, the shared passion for our mission – that's what inspires me. It's not just a job; it's a calling.

BB: I love the people, all of them! From the staff to the clients, every single one of them matters to me and if I can help them grow into their next season in life, even if it’s just from an administrative role, it makes me feel like I am living out my passion and purpose.

Q: How do you think Foundation Stone's approach to substance abuse recovery uniquely caters to the needs and experiences of women?

HS: The Pearl, Wellness for Women, recognizes the unique needs of women in recovery, tailoring treatment plans to address those needs with a holistic and supportive approach. As one of the few long-term treatment centers for women, our commitment to each woman extends beyond immediate treatment. We provide comprehensive care that transitions with each woman from initial sobriety to real-life applications. Our approach ensures each woman is equipped with self-confidence, hope, and practical tools to maintain long-term sobriety and thrive in life.

Q: Can you share a personal anecdote or experience that highlights the impact you've witnessed or contributed to as a female employee at Foundation Stone?

HS: A personal highlight for me is witnessing the impact of our collective efforts on clients' lives. Being part of this transformative process is incredibly rewarding.

Q: Looking ahead, what are some of your aspirations for the future of women in the workplace, particularly within the realm of substance abuse recovery programs, and how do you envision Foundation Stone playing a role in that evolution?

HS: Looking ahead, I envision a future where women play even more significant roles in the behavioral health space. Foundation Stone can lead the way by continuing to empower and uplift women, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to thrive in this important field.

My heart is overflowing with warmth and gratitude for the incredible women of Foundation Stone. Their stories have shown their unwavering dedication to our shared mission of healing and empowerment. Together, we're a force for positive change, guiding individuals on their journey to recovery and spreading rays of hope in our communities. Thank you for joining us in honoring these amazing women who continue to light up the path of our Foundation Stone Family of Programs with their brilliance and kindness.
