Honoring Service and Reflecting on Leadership: A Veterans Day Tribute

As Veterans Day arrives, I find myself reflecting deeply on the significance of this day and the values it represents. In 2021, I had the profound honor of marching in the NYC Veterans Day Parade as part of the United States Air Force Detachment 560. This experience was made even more impactful by the presence of General Charles Q. Brown Jr., who now is the 21st Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, being the nation’s highest-ranking military officer: principal advisor directly to the Commander in Chief (President), Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council. Walking alongside such a distinguished leader was an experience I'll never forget.

One of the most memorable moments was having the opportunity to speak with General Charles Q. Brown Jr. While I cannot share any details of what was discussed other than the pictures taken by the U.S. Government and Air Force, I can say that his insights, humility, and dedication to service left a lasting impression on me. He embodies the principles of integrity, excellence, and respect—values that are at the core of the Air Force and the broader military community.

As a recent Summa Cum Laude graduate for my second degree at Mercy University, where I majored in International Relations & Diplomacy with a minor in Criminal Justice specializing in Homeland Security, I was the only person inducted into the Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society for International Studies in 2024. My academic journey has been driven by a passion for service and a commitment to fostering strong international relationships. I have furthered this commitment by repressing the delegations of Ghana, Gabon, Denmark, and the United States of America at Diplomatic events worldwide, garnering multiple awards.

General Charles Q. Brown Jr. has stressed the importance of:

"Accelerate Change or Lose" (Brown).

This statement resonates now more than ever. As we honor the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, it's essential to consider the quality of leadership that guides them. Thoughtful, informed, and principled leadership is crucial not only within the military but across all levels of governance.

The Importance of Thoughtful Leadership

Recent events have underscored the profound impact that leadership decisions can have on individuals and our nation's standing. In a 2018 conversation, then-President Donald Trump was recorded discussing U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch. After hearing criticisms from associates not directly related to the daily operations and duties of the ascribed position, he reportedly said:

"Get rid of her" (Dawsey).

This abrupt directive, seemingly made to a staffer/advisor in the room without thorough investigation or due process, led to the recall of a dedicated diplomat who had served our country faithfully.

Ambassador Yovanovitch's Contributions to Ukraine

Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch dedicated her career to strengthening U.S. relations abroad, and her tenure in Ukraine was marked by significant achievements:

  1. Championing Anti-Corruption Reforms: She was a steadfast advocate for anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine. Working closely with Ukrainian civil society and government officials, she supported the establishment and strengthening of key institutions like the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO). Her efforts were instrumental in promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law (United States Department of State).
  2. Strengthening Security Cooperation: Amidst the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine, Ambassador Yovanovitch played a pivotal role in deepening the strategic partnership between the United States and Ukraine. She facilitated U.S. security assistance and military training programs, bolstering Ukraine's defensive capabilities and reinforcing the United States' commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity (United States Department of State).
  3. Promoting Democratic Reforms and Good Governance: She actively supported Ukraine's efforts to implement democratic reforms aimed at strengthening its institutions. By engaging with Ukrainian leaders on judicial reforms, decentralization, and energy sector reforms, she helped reduce the influence of corrupt oligarchs, promoted fair practices, and enhanced the effectiveness of government institutions (United States Department of State).

Her abrupt removal not only impacted her personally but also had broader implications for international diplomacy and our nation's reputation. Actions taken without proper evaluation can undermine trust, morale, and the effectiveness of our efforts abroad.

A Contrast in Leadership Styles

The contrast between such impulsive actions and the deliberate, principled approach advocated by leaders like General C. Q. Brown is stark. General C. Q. Brown's emphasis on leadership that matches the service and sacrifice of our Airmen highlights the need for leaders who are measured, informed, and aligned with the values of those they lead.

“Leaders must develop future leaders who can do the same” (Brown).

It's crucial that those in positions of power embody the integrity, diligence, and respect that our service members uphold every day. Leadership should not be about personal agendas or reactive decisions but about thoughtful consideration of what is best for the country and its citizens.

Personal Reflections and Aspirations

These events have had a profound impact on me. The idea that a dedicated public servant could be dismissed without due diligence is concerning. It underscores the importance of having leaders who respect the processes and people that make our democracy strong.

Inspired by leaders like General C. Q. Brown and Ambassador Yovanovitch, I am committed to pursuing a career in International Relations and Diplomacy. Their examples of integrity and dedication guide my aspirations to serve our country and foster strong international relationships - devoid of failures in procedures and due diligence allegedly in my opinion as seen by now President-Elect Donald Trump.

A Call to Honor and Uphold Our Values

On this Veterans Day, let's honor our veterans not only through words but by upholding the values they fought to protect. Let's advocate for leadership that matches their service and sacrifice—leadership that is worthy of their dedication.

We must recognize that the actions of our leaders have real consequences for individuals, our nation's standing, and the global community. By supporting leaders who exemplify integrity and holding all in positions of power accountable to the highest standards, we honor the sacrifices made by our veterans.

In Gratitude

To all veterans: Thank you for your unwavering commitment and sacrifice. Your service inspires us to strive for excellence, integrity, and a better future for our nation.

Let us all, in our respective capacities, work towards embodying the principles that our veterans have fought to protect. Together, we can build a future that reflects the best of who we are as a nation.

Final Thoughts

As we navigate these times, each of us has a role to play in shaping the future. Whether through civic engagement, community involvement, or professional endeavors, we can contribute to a culture that values thoughtful leadership and principled action.

Let's use this day not only to remember but also to recommit ourselves to the ideals that make our nation strong. By fostering leadership that is informed, respectful, and aligned with our core values, we honor the legacy of those who have served.

Very Respectfully,
