"Honoring the Pillars: A Tribute to My Educator Tribe during National Teacher Appreciation Week"

When I first stepped into the classroom, I was surrounded by a tribe of educators whose unwavering support and wisdom guided me every step of the way. Among them, my mother, Brenda Jean Scott Gordon, stood as the epitome of excellence in education. With her nuggets of wisdom and keen coaching, she instilled in me the importance of teaching the whole child, not just the curriculum.

My godmother, Geraldine Swann, echoed her sentiments, offering invaluable advice and reminding me of the power of preparation and attentive lesson planning. Aunt Karen Hinton, a beacon of encouragement, assured me of my potential in middle school education and imparted invaluable lessons on professionalism and continuous learning.

And then there was Aunt Joan Hinton, whose dedication to her students and unwavering love inspired me to strive for excellence in every interaction. Their collective impact on my journey cannot be overstated. They nurtured, mentored, and prayed for me, offering solace during moments of doubt and celebrating my victories with unwavering pride.

As we embark on Teacher Appreciation Week, let's extend our gratitude not just to individual educators, but to the entire tribe that supports, uplifts, and empowers us. From the decorated classrooms to the supply donations, their generosity knows no bounds, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and classrooms.

My mother would be the pillar of my educator tribe. Devoting her life to teaching, she balanced her roles as a third-grade teacher, an art instructor, a Sunday school teacher, and a curator of the Black Patent Museum, which showcased the contributions of African Americans to society. Despite her busy schedule, she always made time for her family, cooking dinners, and being present. She made it look effortless, which I now have come to understand, really isn't. Witnessing her dedication and passion for education has deeply inspired me, and I'm honored to have had such an amazing role model and pillar of strength in my life.

My father was a professor of educators, a philosopher who taught religious studies and a writer of short stories. He also taught creative writing and was my mentor for my entire career as a middle school science teacher.
